You follow the Chinaman.

Although you didn't see it, you're sure that the whole performance in the alley was a method for Jean-Claude and the Chinaman to trade briefcases. Possibly the Chinaman is Xu Huang. You decide to follow him.

The Chinaman leads you through the city of Shanghai. You wonder if he's wandering aimlessly, but his pace and air of determination lead you to believe he knows exactly where he's going.

At one point, he stops at a phone booth. You can't hear what he says, but when he hangs up, he sets out at a furious pace. You keep up with him, and at last you both arrive at Shanghai's bay. The Chinaman goes all the way to the edge of the bay, where a large, wooden pier stretches out into the sea. The pier is broken and listing half-submerged on one side.

Even as you look over the pier, a strange rumbling sound distracts you, and you stare in astonishment to see an enormous submarine surface near the broken pier. On its side, you see the words, "Xu Huang."

huge submarine

The Chinaman you've been following is obviously planning to board this submarine. Others have appeared out of nowhere and seem to be waiting to board, too. You realize you have a big decision: do you sneak aboard the submarine? You could be risking your life, but you are learning so much about the international terrorists. By going on the submarine, you could crack the mystery wide open.

However, you also might be stuck on a submarine for a very long time. You could be spotted as an outsider and killed. If you don't make it back to land and a telephone, no one will ever know what you've discovered. If you return to France now and report, you will be able to inform the authorities, who may be able to track the submarine.

You take a cleansing breath before making the decision.
