You hide in the closet.

Quicker than quick, you spring into the closet and pull the door shut. The door is one of the kind with the slatted front. You're able to see and hear slightly. Jean-Claude comes into the room with his briefcase. He drops it beside the bed and picks up the telephone.

"It's done," he says into the receiver. "Where should I be? Which pier? Broken, you say? No, don't expect me to meet the Xu Huang today. I'll come tomorrow." He laughs nastily. "Yes, I know how to spend my last night on earth. Au revoir."

He hangs up and goes into the bathroom. You hear the water running. You hear footsteps go through the room, then the door open and close. He's left again.

You come out of the closet and look around. Jean-Claude's briefcase is still sitting next to the bed. You're sure now that he'll be staying in Shanghai until tomorrow. Meet the Xu Huang? you think. Perhaps Xu Huang isn't a person after all.
