2.1 Where to get add-ons

Completed Heretic and the Serpent Riders? Want more? You'll be wanting to download WADs, then. WADs can include new levels, graphics, monsters, sounds, music, or a combination of the above. So where do you get them from?

Well, a good place to start is right here in the Gestalt666 Resource. Check out the Heretic Top Ten which features my ten favourite levels for Heretic, as well as a Level Of The Week.

You could also do worse than checking out my own levels. You can find them on The Gestalt666 Heretic Levels Page here in the Resource.

If you just can't get enough Heretic, then you'll be wanting to check out ftp.cdrom.com or one of its mirror sites. This is the largest of the Doom FTP sites, with dozens of Heretic WADs of all shapes and sizes. Just check through the table below to find the site nearest to you...

2.2 How To Use WADs

To play an add-on WAD for Hertic, you need to use the -FILE option at the DOS command line. Simply put your WAD in the same directory as Heretic, and type HERETIC-FILE FILENAME.WAD, replacing FILENAME.WAD with the name of the WAD file you want to play.

You can load up more than one WAD by just listing the files after the -FILE switch. For example, HERETIC -FILE FILE1.WAD FILE2.WAD FILE3.WAD

2.3 Can I use Doom WADs with Heretic?

No.

But you can convert them.

If you run out of Heretic add-ons to play, you can convert a Doom WAD to run with Heretic. Try downloading Doom Conversion (DM2CV) from one of the following sites -

UK US

Once you've got this handy utility, you can convert Doom I, Doom II, Ultimate Doom and Heretic WADs into WADs compatible with any of the other games... The program will automatically change monster and weapon types and wall, floor and ceiling textures to make sure the WAD will work properly. Once it's done, you can just run the converted WAD as normal... Once you've done this, you'll have a near infinite selection of WADs to run with Heretic!
