Turn 5 -- Road to Milbourne

Road to Milbourne. 8th day of Hammer. Morning.

The evening passes rather uneventful, no one had anything to report following their watch and all received a much needed rest.

There were of course discussions about opening the chest during the evening and seeing what could be so valuable but it was agreed that this would not be the safest course of action. The consensus of the group was to deliver the prisoners to Milbourne for trial and then continue on the Thurmaster and deliver the chest to Tauster.

As you wake that morning and set out for Milbourne everyone appears to be much more cheerful and there is a greater feeling of respect and comfort with each of your companions now that you are aware of their background and the events that have shaped their lives thus far. The temperature has warmed and as you set out for Milbourne (following another excellent meal cooked by Dain) the snow on the road begins to melt. It makes for muddy travelling but nothing too bad and it doesn't dampen everyone's spirits.

You maintain your normal marching order, keeping the prisoners in the middle of the group watched ever vigilantly by Brother Randor, Ortho and Talimar. Kersath and Zir'zool decide not to do any scouting ahead of the group as you are only a few hours outside the town. You do not meet anyone on the road and do not run into any trouble in getting to the town. Apparently the attack by Carlanis and his men was an isolated incident and they didn't have any other accomplices.

When you arrive at Milbourne you see before you a small village of some 150-200 people, most of whom apparently live in the farmsteads that surround the village. Most of the town buildings and homes are made of wood with the exception of three rather large buildings within the town. As you enter the town gates most of the people eye you warily as they apparently are not too familiar with such a large group of armed and armoured men and women in their town but they are still mostly polite and nice when spoken to.

Talimar approaches a middle-aged lady carrying a basket of clothes up from the river, "Excuse me kind lady, these men attacked us on the road outside of town and we took them captive. Could you tell me who we should turn these vagrants over to for trial?"

The lady looks over the entire group and then a smile crosses her face, "Attacked you did they? Well I s'pose they be gettin' whats they deserve then for bein so stupid as to do that. You be wanting Garyld though, he's the constable in these parts, also a darn good carpenter I must say. His shop is over in the center of town."

Talimar thanks the lady and passes her a copper crown for her troubles. She smiles at the gift and waits for everyone to pass. Kre looks back to see the lady bite the copper and then smile at the realisation it is real as she puts it in a pouch.

It is very easy for you to find the carpenter Garyld's shop. Most of the building is a large work studio, as you enter you see a lot of the tools of a carpenter as well as several pieces of excellently crafted furniture as well as several well-made bows and arrows about the store. As you enter you are greeted by an older man (early 50's) who walks with a slight limp. He is still handsome though, with a mop of thick black hair and lean 6' frame. From the looks of him and the way he carries himself, Kersath and Zir'zool get the impression that he has had some training as a Ranger in his past. There are also two huge retriever-like hunting hounds who follow him as he enters the room.

"Greetings! How can I help you?" says Garyld as you enter.

"Yes good sir, these ruffians attacked us on the road to your good town yesterday eve and by the grace of Tyr we were able to foil their attack and take them captive. We were told that we could place them into your custody for the proper trial," offers Brother Randor.

"Yes, I am the town constable. I recognise these three as local vagrants, Davin it looks like you've bitten off more than even you can handle now. How did you get involved in this?" asks Garyld. Not waiting for an answer he continues, "Well no matter, we've got you now and there'll be no gettin' away this time. I don't recognise this one though," he says pointing to Carlanis.

"Just tell me what happened to your group and then I'll turn 'em over to Darius Carman, he acts as local magistrate for their trial."

As you describe the events that surrounded the attack, Garyld listens intently to the story before taking the men into custody.

"I thank you for takin' care of these vermin for me. I'll be sure they gets whats comin' to 'em. Will you be stayin' long in our town? If you need sometin' to wash the dirt of the road from your throats I'd suggest the Baron of Mutton inn. They have good company and the best ale in the town."
