Newbie Guide to ShadowThieves

I realized that I could impart my knowledge of the ShadowThieves onto others who wished to join our ranks and so I created this guide. As a newbie, you will find the following items of immense help:

Advancing

ShadowThieves have two primary skills, covert and occult. They also have a few fighting skills that are important. To see your current values for these skills, type 'skills' or 'skills covert', 'skills occult' and 'skills fighting'. When you first log on, turn on your race channel ('race on') and ask where the newbie area is for your race. Go there, join the newbie guild and gather xp. Remember there is an xp cap so type 'sheet' to see the maximum ammount of xp you can carry at once. Join the Newbie guild first and advance through it. Then join the Dark Initiate (DI) guild and advance through it. Then you will be ready to join the ShadowThieves guild.

Newbie Guild Advancing

fighting to 5
covert to 5
occult to 5
general to 5 (optional)

Dark Initiate Guild Advancing

Dark Initiate Level Determination: occult

Try to gather 400k xp so you can breeze through DI guild. Ignore fighting skills here. Concentrate on getting occult to 20. This is what I did although you are free to improvise:
o.methods to 10
o.m.dancing to 20
o.m to 20
o.spells to 10
o.s.cursing to 20
o.s to 20
o to 20

You could also just straight out advance occult to 20 and you will only loose a little on the overall overmax.

ShadowThief Guild Advancing

ShadowThief Level Determination: (covert + occult) * 3/4

Remember to type 'learn' to get a list of all the occult spells you should have from the advancing in Dark Initiates guild. Then type 'learn <spell>' to add the spell to your 'spell' list. Remember to do this each time you advance occult.

It is best to first focus on advancing your hit points. Your total HP depends on fighting.points and advancement of any fighting skill does not affect your overall level.
f.points to 50
f to 50

You then have several options. You can continue working on fighting skills or move on to other skills. Remember, you can advance fighting skills as much as you want now and not raise levels. The lower in levels you are, the better xp you make.
One thing to keep in mind. You cannot be Player Killed (PKed) until you are above level 25. ShadowThieves are one of the most commonly PKed guilds (expect to be killed at least once before level 100 just for being an ST). You will join the ShadowThief guild at around level 15-18. If you work on fighting skills when you join, you can max them out before you can be legally PKed. Also, once you pass level 25, do not try to horde experience. Go and advance once you have gathered 1-2 million xp.
Either way, eventually you should do the following fighting advancement so you can dodge:
f.combat.dodging.melee to 300
f.c.d to 300

Now it is best to get covert to a comfortable level for backstab. As much as it may pain you, if you want a good overmax, do NOT advance stealing or hiding skills now.
c.stealth to 100

Now start working on occult skills. I personally like to max occult completely before going back to work on covert, but that is a matter of preference. There are several ways to advance occult.

Method 1
This method should result in approximately 270 dancing and 290 cursing.
o.s.cursing to 150 You should now be able to learn dark fist
o.m.dancing to 150 This is our version of sharp when using certain weapons
o.s to 150
o.m to 150
o to 150
You should now be able to learn all the occult spells including paranoia.

Method 2
This method should result is approximately 310 dancing and 230 cursing.
o.s.cursing to 150
o.m.dancing to 150
o.s.charming to 100
Do this only if you want paranoia spell.
o.m to 150
o to 150
o.s to 150
Rest of spells to 150

Note the difference between the two methods is when you raise occult to 150. Don't forget to learn all your newly acquired spells.

Now it is time to work on covert skills. You must resist the temptation to raise thieving or hiding skills until indicated. The following should get you about 495 stealth and 360 pickpocket.
c.s to 300
c to 300
Now you can work on hiding and thieving skills.
c.hiding to 300
c.thieving.pickpocket to 300
c.t to 300
c.t.sleight-of-hand to 300
c.t.lockpick to 300

Now to boost the GP and add some finishing touches.
o.points to 150
f.combat.range.thrown to 150
f.c.r to 150
general.charisma to 20
general.lore to 20

Congratulations, you are now a maxxed ShadowThief. Have fun advancing whatever other skills you wish to pass the time in your maxxed life.

Rearranging

There are several different races in the ShadowThief guild and each will have different bonuses and penalties. When rearranging, keep in mind the ShadowThief's main stat is dex, but int also matters. Dodging, backstab and stealing are all dex dependant. Occult spells are int dependant. Total GP comes partially from dex, but GP regeneration rate depends on int. Set your order to dex, int, str, con, wis or dex, int, con, str, wis.

You should aim for 18/20 int and 18/70 dex. I personally prefer having even more int since there are more items which boost dex than int. You should also aim for 14+ in con and str. Just keep rerolling until you get what you want. It is possible to get 3 stats at 18+.

There are a couple quests that will raise a stat of your choice permanently. Ask around about them. Your permant stats after rearrange can be changed through these quests. Stats can be temporarily changed with certain items.

Does and Donts: Tips on Stealing

The first and most important thing to remember about stealing is to not overstep your abilities. Do not try stealing from high level players until you are a high level player yourself. You might get lucky once or twice, but sooner or later you will be caught. And luck usually has it it will be a pissed off player who catched you and will then hunt you. If you are caught, you are on your own. Steal smartly not blindly and you will survive much longer.

You are not allowed to steal from a player unless they can legally PK you. This means you cannot steal from those under level 25 and cannot steal until you are above level 25. You should wait to steal from players until you have about 100 pickpocket and high stealth which will put you well above level 25. You can start stealing from normal NPCs at a much lower skill level. Coin and bag steals are always the easiest to pull off. Also, small carried items like potions are easy steals. Do NOT try to steal held weapons. It can be done, but you will be caught. Also do not try to steal worn items. You will fail and be caught with certain armours (try it on an NPC or friend sometime).

When you go to player steal, remember there are certain guilds you should not steal from. Remember to look at the person before you steal. If you are hidden, the person will not see you look at them. Remember to check if you are hidden first. Type 'con all' and if you dont consider yourself, you are hidden. The first line of a look at a person will have his title. Learn the approximate titles for certain guilds. We do not steal from some guilds because we either have alliances with them or they offer services to us. This is especially true with other Trinity guilds.

Guilds you should NOT steal from:

There are certain NPCs which have items of value but are hard to steal from or autoattack. These include Synn and Astilar. Always get an invis before stealing from one of these autoattacking NPCs. They can easily see through our hide even when it is at 300. Unless you are maxxed and bored, do not attempt to steal from Tanala or Nevermind.

Finally....
NEVER use stealing triggers. These are bound to get you in trouble sooner or later. If you use triggers, you may steal from someone who is much higher than you or from one of an allied guild. If you use triggers, don't expect any help for the trouble the triggers get you into.

Directions

Talis's maps give more detail about RoD than I could put here. Spend some time looking them over. I'll put directions here that are not included in his maps. I am assuming by this point, you know where Lirath is. These directions will stem from there.

Anytime you see something like n->nw it means go north until you can go northwest.

From west gate Lirath:
