Covenant of the Druids - A Resurrection |
A few moments after Snicker had expelled his last breath, the stone lid of the sarcophagus began to move, until an opening wide enough for a man to fit through was created. From inside the stone coffin, a man emerged. He was not a young man. His beard, which covered much of his face, was so grey it was almost white in colour. He climbed nimbly out of the opening, showing an agility that belied his obvious great age. When he reached the warrior, he crouched down beside him and placed two fingers on the side of his neck. His features grew sad for a moment, as he found no signs that the warrior lived. When he stood up once more, three more men had emerged from the sarcophagus and joined him at the warrior’s side. The newcomers looked almost identical to the first. Each wore the same long brown robes, and had flowing, grey beards. |
The four men stood side by side for a moment, heads bowed, before the first one spoke. "It is not too late," he said simply. |
One of the others gave him a stern look. "No, Jonass...it is not too late, but it does not matter. His life is of no concern to us. Have you learned nothing from the past?" His voice was harsh and accusing. |
Jonass held the man’s gaze for a moment, before looking away. "We still did not do wrongly, Aremn. Why do we have this power if not to use it? What purpose does it serve down below? We do not get sick, we do not age as other men do. Why if not to help those who need it?" |
Aremn’s eyes softened slightly. "I understand your doubts, my son, but would you break our covenant so soon after the last time? It was devised for a reason. Without it, we would have perished long ago. We cannot allow ourselves to get involved in the doings of the outside world. You saw yourself what harm it can cause." |
Jonass suddenly looked eager. More like a boy than an old man. "Maybe this one can help us undo that. He does not look very strong, but oft times it is the heart within that is the source of true strength. If we help him, maybe he will help us in return." |
Aremn looked doubtful, but there was a glint of hope in his eyes as well. He glanced wordlessly at the other two men, until each one nodded in response to the silent question. "Very well. We will bring him back into this world. We will see if he is of better character than the last one we helped." |
Silently the four men formed a circle around the lifeless body and knelt on both knees on the grass. They then placed one hand each upon the warriors chest and began to chant in low voices. They continued to do this for almost a minute, their eyes clamped shut, until at last they felt the warrior’s chest begin to rise. A few moments later it rose and fell with enough regularity for them to cease the chanting, and open their eyes. Without another word, they rose to their feet, and it was left to Jonass to carry the small warrior. One by one they re-entered the sarcophagus. Once they were all inside, the lid was closed once more, blocking them off securely from the outside world. |
