Dear one at home I am well suffer a hard night left Elmyra Monday 530 P,M. had the extreme pleasure of standing o nthe platform to keep from suffocation by standing in the Cars the connections between Elmyra and Baltimore leave a larger margin for rest than I fancy in such a time as this but I must submit as I am to much of a cripple to try a foot race with the iron horse altho I think it would not be a hard race part of the way at Springport or Williamsport 85 miles from Elmyra the first man to engage a birth was aroused about 8 this morning by the cry prepare for Baltimore took Breakfast at the Barrumore House Beef steak & coffee fryed Oisters & a cup of coffee Oister stew & buckwheat pan cake constituted the chief part of my breakfast for which I paid $1.25 am in the cars for Washington will mail this the first opportunity am in Company with Lieut. Lee Capt. Richardson gave me an introduction to him at Can... belonging to his Co. 126 Reg he is going to the front he is well acquinted with Harrison he says the reports in regard to his gambling & defrauding the boys is all a base falsehood a young man came a board at starkee from Dundee he is going to the front he is well acquainted with H___ & family they are well Lulin (?) has married a verry respectable young man of property Old Mrs. Harrison dies lately well 'A' is 10.30 & we are sitting in the cars at Bal waiting for I know not what getting nervus it seems as tho we should never get there the solders that came home to vote are on the return they load every car plat forms & all but I have a seat & am like to for all going a head Lieut.Lee found Capt. May here he is Capt of the Taxas rangers he is as wild as a wild mustang & his tongue flies as fast as their herds before they are fattened 11.15 just began to move halt 11.25 on the move again Washington & delayed

came here to late to get my papers to day this red tape business is enough make a man scratch his head to morrow at 10 the doors will open at the War department then for my turn but it is said a bad beginning makes a good ending Officers here think I cant get a pass but I will fo & see Old Abe before I give up the boat leaves to morrow at 3 P.M. this going by jerks I dont like beside they all grab for the bottom of the packet Nov 23, PM, got my pass it expires the 26th I was the first at the Office before I left the crowed crowd came stand back cant go in was the word dident I hold up my head & walk off hat on this holding ones hat under his arm I dont like it 3 hours & I am off the boat leaves at 8 P.M. 48 hours run to City Point Lieut. Lee who is with me from Canandaigua was a little late other claimes a head of him he is wating for the world be God Offisials if he gets his pass in time for the boat he will go if not he must wait another day he wants me to wait if he does but I wait for no man when there is an opportunity to move ahead have been here 24 hours it seems like 24 days Lieut. Lee has just come in to report he cant go so I go alone it froze hard last night a warm sunshiney day I met Lendley H Smith of Farmington he is in business for the government Dr. Hutchinson of Pitsburg, formerly of Rochster is stopping here at the US Holet Hotel started 2 P.M. 23 passed Alexanderia Mount Vernon Fortress Monroe Ft Washington Newport News White Point Harreson Landing etc to city Point 2 1/2 PM 24th went to Provo Marshal got my papers went to the wharf making inquiries about the boat a slap on the shoulder Turned Lum Hays & Oscar stood there just in from the front Charley well went back to wilsons wharf putting my papers in the hopper to be passed through it will take one day at least to ground the grist have given the engraving to Oscar & Lum will write often am well been to Capt Tompson had ..... introduction to his wife the first lady [following written in margins] I have seen since I left the boat only 3 there out of 1000 or 1200 she visits the sick a real lady they have log house is comfortable

I rec.e your kind letter last night and take this ...ing to answer it you Said thaht you have rec the letter stating not to send the box I wrote thje other night and told you to forward it and with out doubt you have received that letter before I hear this if you have not sent it before this reaches you I wish you would get a paper of (Sabatus?) and put in and send me for it is not to be had hear and we are sum on the bake and it makes it prety tuff with out any thing to rase with well to day I had another chill and fever it went prety tuff I tell you it is rather cool now and a good deal of raine we are having now and that makes it worse a good deal and if I did not have a Shanty of my own it would bee worst still for thay have not got any stoves yet in the barricks yet and cant tell when they will git any I have not received the Suspenders yet but will to night with out doubt... letter came a good deal quicker than a paper or any thing else in that way well I have got a promise of a pass to go up to the front and see Chas.. I hope thare will be no mistake this time I dont think I can git far enough to See Orv for he is way out on the front and I cant get a pass long enough to go far well I must close hoping you will never forget to write you Old friend and well wisher Oscar
