Background:

Jynmare was born into service to the noble house of Orchids, the quasi-royal family of the nation of Ehzenstat. This was a sort of serfdom that came with higher status that effectively negated the "serf" penalty. Since she possessed the talent of magery she was more useful to the house as a wizard and was given training as such. In time, she married Jaasten Acidworker, another "serf Orcidae", a rather competent alchemist 12 years her senior.

In due course, she became the mother of 3, which slowed her magical studies. It didn't stop them entirely, she managed to arrange a study course one day a week.

She returned home one day to find her husband and children bound and brutally murdered.

Jaasten was a rather advanced alchemist who could make talismans and amulets (See GURPS Magic Items for details). Use of Images of the Past and Summon Spirit spells managed to get the details of murders. Jaasten had been hired to make a couple of "Odysseus" talismans. Because his wife was studying and their housekeeper ill, he conducted his buisness at home rather than go outside the town to his lab/shop. His customer paid for the items with the coin of murder, slaying Jaasten, and the three children with almost sadistic glee.

A subsequent attempt to view the murder ended disastrously and effectively erased it. Fortunately, one of the people who viewed the spell was artist enough to draw a good likeness of the killer's face. A copy of it is carved into a wood block that Jynmare carries with her everywhere.

Subsequently the talismans were traced to assassins who tried to murder Lord Withel of Harazak, a leading member of the House of Pegasi, and the rival house suspects Orchidae of the plot based largely on the talismans' origin.

Attempts to magically trace the killer almost caught him early on. The man murdered a noble who was known to have a ring that rendered the noble scryproof and has had only mudane pursuit to worry about since then.

The House does not like it when their people are murdered and the wrath of the Orchids is indeed fearsome, but there are limits, particularly when war with a rival house is looming. Jynmare was released from her duties to the House and permitted to hunt her family's killer, and given letters of introduction that would facilitate aid from Orchidae and their friends throughout the land.

This is the story as Jynmare knows it. If she is used in campaign, remember that political intrigue plotlines include numerous twists and unexpected turns. It may be that a faction within Orchidae tried to do something to Lord Withel for any number of purposes. It might even be that Withel arranged the "failed" attack on him just to have an excuse to make demands upon Orchidae. Or any number of other plots.
