The pair were once the henchmen of the Goomba King, a Goomba that was made gigantic by the power of the Star Rod. After Mario and Goombario defeated them, they made Goombario their new leader, and set out to lead their lives in the same way as him.
The Goomba Brothers have reformed thanks to the help of Goombario, and may be seen helping people out around the Goomba Village and Toad Town.
"He's the eldest and strongest of the Notorious Goomba Brothers, but that doesn't mean he'll pose problems for a plucky plumber. A couple of healthy stomps will send him crying back to the Goomba King." - Paper Mario Player's Guide
"This is Red Goomba. He's the older of the two notorious Goomba Bros. The Goomba King ordered him to try to stop you. You can take this guy no prob. He just has a little more HP than an ordinary Goomba." - Goombario.
Attack Pattern: The Goomba Brothers ambush Mario and Goombario on their way to Toad Town. Like regular Goombas, Red uses head bonk attacks. After being defeated, the brothers regroup with the Goomba King and attack Mario together. Red only has 2 HP during this second battle.
Basic Fighting Strategies:You should attack Blue Goomba first in the first battle, as he has fewer heart points. Regular attacks work well, but you may also use a power jump or two to speed the battle up. In the second battle stick to regular attacks, or look at the advanced strategies for a special tip.
Advanced Strategies: During the second battle, Goombario suggests that you finish off the Goomba Bros. first, but the first thing you should do is hit the bandage on the tree stump. This will cause a giant flower or nut type thing to hit all three of the Goombas, and it will defeat the Goomba Bros. right away.
