Strider Returns: Journey from Darkness
(Genesis, 1990)

The much-anticipated sequel to the immensely popular Strider for the Sega Genesis, Strider Returns: Journey From Darkness unfortunately didn't prove itself as worthy of the Strider name as its predecessor.

The graphics are mostly dark and muddy-looking, and the Genesis has a bad reputation for horrible sound, which doesn't way much about the music of sound effects. Strider Returns even tried digital voice clips, a rare feature for Genesis games. It's too bad that they mostly all sounded like someone gargling in a closet. Check the Multimedia section and hear them in all their 16-bit glory.

Thankfully, Strider Returns fared well in the gameplay department, featuring tight control and interesting level design.
