High Counselor

The High Counselor is often a friend of the king's family for generations, but don't be fooled, this is by no means nepotism, the counselor must be competent, decisive, and willing to go out on a limb when he believes the king is wrong.  The counselor will always be there in the Kings toughest moments in life, and will be the one chosen to tell the King he is wrong, should that ever occur.  He can't stop the king from doing anything, but often if the High Counselor disagrees the king will go over the situation again making a clearer, less brash decision.  His duties are to listen to the other counsel members complaints and worries, and to decide whether they are important enough to be brought up in session or if there are other ways of handling the situation.  The high counselor will often times spend time with the king's son (when the king is busy) breeding him for a life of royalty, or even take over for short times should the king have to leave to further future alliances or comence a war (with our huge army :))  Should the king die without a heir, he would be the first to fill in the gap in times of emergency, until a new king can be crowned.  An awful lot of power you say, well that's one of the downfalls of a midevil monarchy, besides, if he wielded his power recklessly, either the king would ask him to step down, the counsel would demand it, or the people would demand it.
