Being
one of the most dark and mysterious of Space Marine Chapters, little is
known of the Dark Angels history. Legends hint that a betrayal among their
ranks almost plunged the whole of the Chapter to the powers of Chaos. Such
was the betrayal that it has left a great stain upon the Chapters honor,
and the Chapter, what is left of it, is now trying to once again restore
their honor, and cleanse the Chapter's name.
Their Primarch Lion El'Jonson, often simply referred to as "The Lion", was discovered upon the Death-world of Caliban by an expedition of knights from the Order. Upon first seeing him the Knights thought that he was some sort of monster, and prepared to kill him. One of the knights seeing more in this strange creature halted his fellows before they attacked. Finding that Lion was not a monster, but a man returned with him to their fortress monastery.
The Lion easily adapted to human society, and was inducted into the Order. Lion and his savior, Luther, quickly became the closest of friends. They excelled in every aspect of the Orders training, and quickly rose through the ranks.
The Emperor eventually reached Caliban, and discovered Lion their. Knowing
him to be one of the lost Primachs the Emperor gave over control of the
Dark Angels Chapter of Space Marines. Making Caliban their new home, Lion
El'Jonson, and the Dark Angels set out with the Emperor on his Great Crusade.
The Lion left his trusted friend, and comrade at home in charge of the
remainder of the Dark Angel forces, but it was not what the ambitious Luther
desired. As reports came back about Lion's successes and victories, Luther
began to feel jealous, and stripped of the glory that should be his.
Upon the end of the Horus Heresy Lion El'Jonson decided to return home to Caliban for a period of time. As the Lion's fleet pulled into orbit around their homeworld they were hit by a devastating barrage of fire from the planets defenses. Taken by sup rise Jonson withdrew to investigate what was occurring. It was soon discovered that Luther had persuaded the Dark Angels under his command to turn to the powers of Chaos. Once hearing this horrific news Jonson and the loyal Dark Angels set upon Caliban with a vengeance. The Loyal Dark Angels stormed the planet, driving their rebel enemies back to the fortress monastery. Once at the Monastery a climactic battle inside between Luther and Johnson, both being evenly matched against each other. All the while the heavy guns of the fleet continued to pond the surface, soon causing the surface to crack and break apart.
Luther being tired, and worn out from the long fight finally stumbled, but the Lion could not bring him self to deliver the killing blow. Luther, taking advantage of Jonson pity, unleashed a blast of psychic energy that wounded Jonson. Luther, poised to finish the Lion, at threat moment realized his treachery and went insane. The Chaos power knowing that once again they had been defeated sent a warp storm to engulf Caliban. Already in a weakened state the planet was ripped apart, the only thing that survived the storm was the gigantic fortress monastery. As for the rebel Dark Angels they were all sucked into the warp, and of Lion El'Jonson there was no sign. Though they searched what was left of the planet they could find nothing.
As for Caliban the Dark Angels remain on what is left traveling through
the galaxy in a random path. Unable to leave what was left of their home
the changed the name to the "ROCK". Knowing that in order to clear their
honor the Dark Angels continue to hunt, and seek out members of the rebel
Dark Angels, which are to this day referred to as the Fallen.
