In order to change your rank edit the ROSTER.DAT file and change offset 54 sector 0 to a hexadecimal number. Changing it to 01 will make you the lowest rank. I think maximum is 13 (hex) - try it out by going up in steps.
If you're given a mission you really don't want to do (like both your primary and secondary missions being transport troops) then don't decline because this affects your chances of promotion. Instead, enter the mission (don't worry about your helicopter set-up). When you're in your chopper simply crash, go back to the main screen and 'recover previous pilot' (click on the drawers on the bottom-right). Now go and do another mission and you'll be given different orders without anything having affected your record. Repeat this until you get a mission you like the look of.
In the helicopter set-up screen, make the third pilot the heavy section leader. Now in your mission, the computer-controlled pilots will be in a group of three and you'll be with one other pilot. This makes it more fun for you and the computer pilots are less likely to be killed.
My preferred set-up is a Longbow Apache loaded full with Hellfire MMW missiles and Sidewinders on the wings.
