The Rangers of Middle Earth
In your travels through the realm of Middle Earth, you may have
come across the foul servants of the West, the skulking Rangers.
These rangers belong to one of three guilds - the Rangers of Gondor,
the Rangers of Ithilien, or the Rangers of the North.
The Rangers of the North are the thieves and scouts of the three
guilds, with a broad range of skills suited to those professions -
they have high levels of hide and sneak. The Rangers of Ithilien
are the most warlike, with the best combat skills to suit their
warlike pursuit. The Rangers of Gondor have the widest range of
spells available to them, although their combat skills are the
weakest of the three guilds.
In combat, Rangers can cast spells
that blacken your armour, weakening it and making it likely to
break; they can attempt to disarm you if you are weaker than them;
or they may throw sand in your face to blind you. As is obvious,
all of their skills are ones suited to their cowardly demeanour,
working in an attempt to put you in a helpless position so they
may slay you through weight of numbers.
The Rangers have ventured widely through the Shire, Gondor and Ithilien, and may often be located skulking under bush or bridge, keeping to the dark, in the hope that they might strike from ambush.
Soldiers of the Army have often reported bands of Rangers hiding under the Brandywine Bridge near Hobbiton, and recently rumours have been heard that Rangers of the North have established some sort of a camp in the ruins of the Kingdom of Arnor, a petty fiefdom which was crushed by the Armies of Angmar in the second age.
These Rangers can often be discovered by searching for hidden
items in a room - an apparently empty room may indeed contain a
band of skulking Rangers hidden from casual sight. On revealing
these Rangers, their approximate level of experience can be
determined by examining their badges, or by introducing yourself
to them.
The weakest of the Rangers wear symbols of brass (Striders);
then steel (Expert Trackers); then silver (Guides and Expert Guides);
then gold (Apprentice Pathfinders); then mithril (Veterans); and
the strongest wear symbols of diamond (also Veterans). These
symbols vary depending on the guild to which the Rangers belong.
Those Rangers with star-shaped brooches belong to the Rangers of
the North, while those with rings belong to the Rangers of Gondor.
Armed with long swords or spears, and wearing lightweight armour
of leather and foresters cloaks of green, the weaker Rangers are
easy targets for all but the smallest of Angmarim, while the
diamond wearing veteran Rangers should not be attacked by those
who are not confident of their strength. Be wary too of Rangers
assisting their brethren - it is not uncommon for a soldier to
find themselves being attacked by a group of three or more Rangers.
Rangers are often armed with powerful weapons beyond their
means to attain, donated by their allies the Knights and the Calians.
