Title Tips Tactics Tricks Traps Top Times

Mario Raceway - Traps

I have won many games because of my innovative usage and variety of traps. When you are in 1st place, the best way to stay in 1st place is to make sure other karters have no opportunity to get close enough to fire those red shells. And often, the best item you will get in a given race is a banana bunch. Do not think of this as bad, think of it as good! A good karter can use such items better than shells while in 1st place, so read on to see some pointers on slowing down karters behind you.

Banana Peels

Considered the weakest item by many, the banana peel is actually a very good item when used properly. If you are in 1st place, expect this item to show up a lot.

The banana peel causes karts that run over it to slide out of control. Because of this, peels should usually be placed near road hazards such as sharp turns at cliffs, penguins, and snowmen, where the karters momentum will carry it into great danger.

If the track does not provide for such tricks, the banana should be placed next to other bananas and/or fake item blocks, creating a road block that will slow down tailgaters. If you have a banana bunch, place them on a turn in a straight line that spans the width of the track. This makes it much more difficult for others to power slide through the turn without spinning out.

Fake Item Block

The Fake Item Block looks like a real item block except for the upside-down question mark. At high speeds and when there's someone at your six, there is not enough time to look for this tell-tale sign. To protect yourself from being tricked, try to memorize the layout of the item blocks on the track so you'll know which of the boxes are fake.

Fakes can be used in a number of different ways. Generally, Fakes should be camouflaged in with real blocks. Try to make it look like it is part of the layout of boxes. You can also try to make the Fake coincide with a real one, making that box unreachable by non-invincible opponents. Also, remember that Fakes are bombs. Whether the opponent knows it is a fake or not really does not matter if they are forced to drive into it. You can drop the Fake in a narrow passageway, such as the bridge after the egg in Yoshi Valley. And, of course, if there's a tailgater on your six, let him have it.
