Intra$ting's Shining Force Page

Shining Force

A humble site paying homage to the first great RPG

A Brief History of Role Playing Games

I believe the first actual RPG was Zelda for Nintendo... Not the greatest one ever created, if you know what I mean. Shining in the Darkness came out a few years later for Sega Genesis. I believe this was the start of an RPG era. Shining Force was the next RPG to come out, and it took the world by storm. Final Fantasy VII is fun, but I remain faithful to the one and only first great RPG: Shining Force.

A Summary of My Shining Force Page

This is my internet Shining Force guide. It may be somewhat contradicting to other sources, but it's what I believe is the truth, and it works for me. But hey, if you have any questions, suggestions, or comments, e-mail me, and I'll get around to it as soon as I can. Enjoy, and use whichever strategies work best for you.

The Characters

In Order of Joining

The Main Character

The Main Character

Name him whatever you like, from silly names like "Bignuts?" to cool names like "Death" or even name him after yourself. Whatever you name him, he's the main character and I will always refer to him as that. I won't even take the easy way out and call him "Max, because that's his default name" as most other Shining Force pages do. All you have to do is replace "The Main Character" with whatever you call your Main Character. Now that we have established that, let's get down to business.
The Main Character is always there, right from the start of the game, in every battle, helping out or in the way, depending on your point of view. I would rather just replace him with almost anyone from the back room, but that's not part of the game. Besides, he gets pretty strong when you give him one of the swords you find. You must always try to protect and level him at the same time, which can be very difficult at times. Keep an eye on him and always try to predict what the enemy will do to keep him from being completely overwhelmed. Remember, if he dies, you have to start the battle over again, and you lose half of your cash. He can be very helpful, and he can also be very annoying. Be patient and always use The Main Character to his maximum potential, and he will come out okay.

Luke

Luke

Luke is a worthy warrior who is a pleasure to have on the team. He is one of the strongest characters you will ever find. He joins you before your first battle and fights with you to the end if you let him onto the battlefield. He is very strong and is a useful tool in defeating bosses and other strong enemies. Use him to protect, use him to attack, use him however you want because his attack strength and defense will almost never let you down.

Ken

Ken

Ken is a powerful knight that makes up in some categories what he lacks in others. He joins at the same time as Luke, Tao, and Hans and will be with you for many battles unless he dies, in which case I recommend raising him because you don't want to lose his skill. His defense is quite low, and lags behind him thoughout his career in the Shining Force, but he makes up for that with his huge hp meter. This enthusiastic knight will always support you and risking his life is one of his hobbies. He is a valuable addition to your team that should never be forgotten.

Tao

Tao

Tao is one of the most valuable characters you will encounter in the game. Her magical fire cannot be avoided and will always do at least six damage to non-boss enemies. I always bring her along until she gets blaze level four because she always needs experience and this spell can do up to 50 normal damage on the right creatures. Always protect her unless she runs out of mana in which case she is just dead weight and I wouldn't care if she died or not because I could just raise her. She is very useful and can help you defeat even the strongest enemies.

Hans

Hans

Hans is an archer, one of the many various types of fighters in the game. His long range will help you take out enemies from far away, but he has little defense and hp. Protect him well and never leave him out in the open if you choose to take him along. He doesn't have the most powerful attack level on your team, but keep him with the level of your team and he will be able to compensate. I usually leave him in the back room because archers are weak, but useful for shooting across water or air. Give him a chance to help out, and he most often will.

Lowe

Lowe

Lowe is one of the healers that help your team to continue without anyone dying in the battle. Lowe joins right after the first four join. He gains all his experience from healing and ten or less heals always means a level up. He can strike a strong blow against the enemy if you need him to, but he is more useful for returning hp to your team. Always bring a healer along. One heal could mean the difference between life and death.

Gong

Gong

Gong is a vital part of the shining force. He is strong and is able to heal during battle. He is to the left of a hut near the gate where you fight your first battle. Cast Egress during either of the first two battles to get there. Gong has a deadly punch and a helpful heal to go along with it. He gets super strong if you use him right. Maybe this phrase will explain it: "You can't go wrong with Gong!"

Gort

Gort

Gort is a powerful warrior like Luke, but to me he seems a bit stronger in defense and attack. He is in the pub/bar at the far right of the town right after the second battle. He is slow at first, but with a little experience, he could be the strongest on the team. Train him enough, and he'll almost always take only one point of damage from any creature.

Mae

Mae

Mae is a strong knight. She joins your team after the king dies. She has great defense, and I can't say anything bad about any of her other stats either. You probably want to keep her in front because she can usually take a lot of hits. Get her defense high enough, and she is unstoppable. She will be a great help to your efforts if you level her enough.

Khris

Khris

Khris is another valuable healer. Don't expect her to do much damage except when you first give her a power staff, because she probably has the weakest attack strength in the game unless you level her way ahead of your team. Her purpose is not to attack or defend, but to heal, which she can do well despite few movement points if used correctly. Let her do her job often, even if only to heal one hit point, so she can level and keep up with the team.

Anri

Anri

Anri is another valuable mage. She joins the second time you talk to her in Manarina. You probably want to give her lots of experience because her freeze level 4 is devastating. After a long time I think she can get bolt level 2, but once you get it, it's not that valuable anymore. She is an extremely useful mage who is a joy to have along on the Shining Force. Always try to give her experience, and she will always come through for you.

Arthur

Arthur

Two words: Arthur sucks. Most likely the most worthless character you will encounter in the game, he can barely do any damage and you need to give him a power ring if you want to level him at all. He joins in Manarina after you get the orb of light. He is standing next to some laundry. I believe that you should just leave him there. Sure, he can get level one of blaze, freeze, and bolt, but by the time he gains these spells, 10 points of damage won't even scratch most enemies. He's not worth it, so don't even bother picking him up unless you want the back room completely full, in which case Jogurt will have to move to a place where he may be slightly in your way. Save the space. Leave him in Manarina.

Balbaroy

Balbaroy

Balbaroy is a versatile flying warrior. His stats are slightly better than those of his wife Amon. He joins after you save him in Shade Abbey. He's worth taking along in most battles as he can fly through most walls and terrain has no effect on him. Keep leveling him, and he can become one of the most valuable on your team.

Amon

Amon

Amon is another valuable flying warrior. She is almost as strong as her hubby Balbaroy, and teamed up, those two can make a great pair. She joins just before you leave Shade Abbey for Bustoke. She has all the benefits of Balbaroy, plus she is more enthsiastic when you talk to her. I don't know if you consider that a virtue, but she's good anyway.

Diane

Diane

Diane is another helpful archer. She joins in Bustoke when you talk to her after you talk to the queen. She is helpful in killing monsters from behind another character. She isn't the most powerful on the team, but an extra few points of damage can help you even if it seemes useless. Give her as much experience as possible and she will be a great contribution to the Shining Force.

Zylo

Zylo

Zylo is a warwolf, and one of the best characters you will find in the game. He joins in Bustoke after you give him the Lunar Dew. His ability to walk almost anywhere on any type of terrain makes him a valuable addition to the Shining Force that should always be taken along in battle. Because he can walk so far ahead of the rest of the team, he usually has a higher level and an enormous attack strength. His defense lags a little, but it catches up in no time if you level him enough. If you're fighting to win, Zylo is always a good choice.

Pelle

Pelle

Pelle is probably the strongest knight you will encounter. He joins after you beat the laser eye battle. He can have the highest attack strength on the team if you give him enough experience and the right weapon. Don't let him down by leaving him off the battlefield and he will probably be able to kill monsters in one hit. Once you equip him with the valkyrie, he will be almost unstoppable.

Jogurt

Jogurt

Although Jogurt is the weakest character you will encounter, he is one of my personal favorites. He joins silently the first time you go to Pao when you go in the little church at the upper left and walk to the top wall of the building (the lower wall isn't solid. Walk through to the left and go up.) He only joins if you talked to him at the place where Gong joins. If he kills any monster, you get a Jogurt ring that converts anyone on your team to look like Jogurt if they equip the ring or if the ring is used on them. Note that this is a hard thing to do because Jogurt can only do a max of 1 damage per attack unless you give him boost and a power ring, and he dies whenever he is attacked and hit. If you really want a Jogurt ring, have him attack an artillery in the battle on the Pao prairie because he is out of their range and they cannot move. There is another technicality with Jogurt: he can never go higher than level one. He can be promoted at any time, but all this does is get rid of all his experience because he just becomes the same thing again. Whenever he levels, he stays level 1 and never gains stats. Jogurt is a pointless and worthless character that is completely obsessed with his helmet. Whether to use him or not is your decision.

Kokichi

Kokichi

Kokichi is a flying knight. He is strong, but he has a limited range of movement compared to the bird warriors. He joins you after Pao leaves for the first time only if you got him to fly in Bustoke by searching the machine on the table while he was working on it. Give him a lot of levels and the right weapon, and he can really kick some enemy ass. He is especially good if he attacks other flying enemies from spots the ground characters can't reach so he can't be in their way if he misses. He starts slow, but catches up quickly, so use him wisely and you won't miss out on his abilities.

Vankar

Vankar

Vankar is yet another one of the many knights that will join your party. There is nothing that makes him much different from the other knights, except for the fact that he is usually behind by the time you get him. He joins the Force after Pao leaves when you talk to him between the tracks. He is only an average knight, and can do everything the other knights do. Only expect from him what you expect from other knights so you won't be disappointed.

Domingo

Domingo

Domingo is one of the most valuable characters you will find in the game. He starts out weak and never does gain much attack strength, but his magic power and quick leveling make up for it. You get Domingo when you hatch him with an egg warmer the second time you enter Pao. You get the egg from a weird machine in Manarina Mage School. Domingo gains levels quickly at first. He becomes very powerful after fighting many battles. He gets freeze level 4, one of the most powerful spells in the game, and he also gets boost, which can help other characters gain levels. Never leave him out of any battle unless you want other characters to gain levels.

Guntz

Guntz

Guntz is another extremely powerful knight, but his movement is very limited compared to other knights. He joins in Pao II in a sheep pen only if you talked to his creator before and after entering the circus tent in Rindo. He makes up for his lack of movement with great strength and defense, and I think he has ignore terrain and can go the the same amount of spaces on anything (please e-mail me if you know for sure. Thanks,
Intra$ting.) He can be your best fighter if you give him a movement ring.

Earnest

Earnest

Another exeptionally strong knight. He joins you in Balbazak's fortress after beating up a poor blue dog. He will always be among your top four knights as long as you keep his levels up with the rest. Don't let him fall behind by keeping him out of the battle, because he usually helps a lot when he is in battle. Put your trust in him to do anything any other knight can, because he is always great to have on the team and eager to fight. Give him a good weapon and he will almost be unstoppable.

Lyle

Lyle

Lyle is the best archer you will encounter. He joins in Rudo at the top floor of a building, and is easy to miss, but don't leave him out. He is valuable to the team and can always come through with style with enough experience and the right weapon. He helps out a lot and is valuable when attacking other monsters from out of their range. Don't leave him in front beacause he has weak defense, but his attack strength is nothing to sniff at.

Bleu

Bleu

Bleu is a weak dragon and continues to be weak for a long time. He joins in Dragonia in the building at the top after you chase him around for a while, but if you want him to gain any levels at all, he needs a boost spell because he isn't going to kill many people with his weak attack strength. It takes a while, but Bleu can be as strong as the rest if you take the time to bring his level up. He is good in almost every category when you make him stronger, and he can fly, too. Get his levels up quickly after you find him, and he will be a big help.

Musashi

Musashi

Musashi is an enormously strong samurai, who joins in Prompt after you read the sign between the two doors after you get the sword of darkness. He is strong and has a powerful weapon, but can't move very far. I suggest that if you use him in battle, equip him with the movement ring. He can hit pretty hard and can take many hits without flinching after he gains a few levels, so give him time and patience, and he will become pretty much immortal.

Alef

Alef

Alef joins after you meet her at the Tower of the Ancients along with Torasu. She starts out behind, most likely, and she must be allowed to gain levels quickly so she can get bolt level four, which I believe is the most powerful spell in the game. I suggest having an extra guardian staff for her before you enter Prompt because she comes with a power staff and if you don't have an extra guardian staff, she'll have to get the demon rod. Get her promoted and leveled quickly, and you will have a very powerful mage on your hands.

Torasu

Torasu

Torasu is the best healer in the game. He joins at the same time as Alef. He starts with a variety of spells, each of which get stronger as he gets more experience. He can get aura level 4, the best healing spell in the game, if you give him lots of chances to heal. He can't attack at all, but he can heal better than any other healer you have. Give him lots of experience, and he will be able to save the toughest cases.

Hanzou

Hanzou

Hanzou is a mystical ninja who becomes very valuable to your team. Hanzou joins when you search the bush with the yellow ninja star on it when you enter Runefaust. He knows a few spells, none of which work very well, but speed and attack strength are his main points. He has good movement and gains levels quickly if he is used right. He has a powerful weapon that will kill after the hit if Hanzou's level is high enough. Jump into battle with Hanzou and you can't go wrong.

The Items

I don't tell about all the items because you don't need to know about most items. They are pretty self-evident. If you want to know which weapon is stronger than the other, the look in the manual, it tells you. Here I tell you important information that the manual doesn't have. Even if you don't have a manual, just equip the weapon to see how much attack strength it adds. So this is not a replacement for a manual. This tells you what you really need to know about items.

Weapons

Picture and Name
Description

Doom Blade
The Doom Blade is a special sword with an interesting ability. Aside from being the second most powerful nonmagical sword in the game, and probably the cheapest but most time consuming to get many of, the Doom Blade has the interesting ability to destroy it's target instantly if it's user has a higher level than the target. This powerful weapon can be acquired in the battle from Prompt to the tower of the ancients from one of the Durahans. Repeat this battle by retreating or casting egress after obtaining the Doom Blade. This wepon can be very powerful. Give it to everyone that can use it except the ones with magical swords or the Katana.

Sword of Light
The Sword of Light is a magical sword which can be used to cast bolt level 2. Since the only character who can equip it is the main character, I recommend that you give it to him. You keep it until you get the Chaos Breaker, but it is useful until then. It probably will make the main character the strongest on the team when you first give it to him. You first get it when you take it from the chest in the battle with Mishaela. This is a valuable weapon that will aid the main character in gaining levels greatly.

Sword of Darkness
The Sword of Darkness is the most powerful sword in the game, tied with the Chaos Breaker. You get the Sword of Darkness from the king in Prompt after Kane dies. The Sword of Darkness calls upon the demon of death to cast desoul level 2 when it is used. I suggest giving the Sword of Darkness to your most powerful bird warrior, because with their great movement and now great attack strength, they will help you to defeat even the most powerful bosses. Use it with care because it is cursed, and you will now be able to strike your enemies with super strength.

Chaos Breaker
The Chaos Breaker is the most powerful sword available in the game. Although the freeze level 3 is not the greatest spell that could be contained by this sword, it is a worthy spell than can strike enough damage when needed. I suggest you equip the main character with it and never take it out of his hands, as he is the only one who can wield it. Use it to kill, as it is not a weapon to leave in the background. Even at a low level, this weapon can influence the main character to hit harder because of how much it increases the power. The defense of the main character will probably do no work because he will usually kill with one blow with this powerful weapon.
