Guards Tank Group Commanders Tactics

(Guards Tank Group Commanders Tactics)

It appears that you have lasted this long here so we're going to help you out  and see if some of our ideas help you out. Most of these are for the new player so please don't be offended if the hints are a little brazen.

Our first  topic is going to be force compisition. Infantry has been the mainstay of all armies however events have made Infantry a wee bit exposed lately. Infantry vs Tank battles tend to be one-sided and are no fun if your on the recieving end. Motorized Battalions and such are a bit better but Tanks still give Infantry a fit most of the time. We have found out that Armor forces with some Infantry support units are about the best. They tend to deliver the most bang for the buck and will last the entire campaign.

Time Management is our next topic. Games ussually last about 19 turns so in the attack you will spend about 5 turns rounding everyone up and getting them into some kind of shape. Place a least 3 units per hex preferably with a light tank unit in there to take the loses from opportunity fire. In the defence these first turns are critical in moving your Infantry units into GOOD defensive terrain and setting up small ambush sites.

In the battles to come you must realize some important factors. The Soviets equipment is not as good as the Germans untill late 1944 and you will have to learn to get the job done with inferior equipment. Your personel problem is not as acute as the German player's. You have the manpower, you will soon recieve the equipment, you just have to hold out until you get it. The best way to express this is the Germans have QUALITY where as the Soviet player has QUANTITY. Use the mass of your forces to cause the German player to do predictable things. Try to get the German player in pocket style defences and then overwhelm them with your numbers.

Probably the most important thing to do is to have fun. I know that you just spent $50.00 plus on the game and getting your butt kicked is not fun. The thing to remember is that as you play you WILL get better(unless you are asleep). No real commander ever walked onto the battlefield and romped and stompted on their first few attempts. That is why the have the lower ranks.......Every battle is a learning exp. Use it and remember it. The armed forces have a saying for commanders---experience it,learn it,LIVE it!!!  Get yourself a little notpad and jot down what does or doesn't work.
