Kampfgruppe Tactiks-- East Front

Well, you've made it this far so here are a few glimmers of hope for some of you that are having some problems defaeting your enemy--The dreaded Russian Horde.

First you must look at your choices of force compisition. Infantry vs Tank will almost always be a lopsided contest and is probably the biggest discouragement of new players. The pros vs cons of Infantry are so wide and have been argued into the dust. Panzer Gren. units stand a better chance but again if Tanks are brought into play it will make you Hate the Game!!  The best force is Armor with some Infantry mixed in for good measure.
When you choose the time period remember that in the beginning your tanks will be  at a disadvantage of say 40% vs 60% . The Soviet support tanks are VERY  persistant. Plan on using air support to combat them and save your other tanks for something they are copatible with.

Time Management is also a critical factor. It will take up to five turns to get your forces in some semblance of order. This includes placing three or four units in a hex  together and moving them as a group. Placing Pzl or Pzll's in the force will allow them to take the loses that would normally be applied to other tanks which are better. Secondly place the light tanks up front to take the brunt of opportunity fire.
Campaign games ussually have about 19 turns so you will really have about 15 turns to reach your objective. If a unit is way out there and time is short--dont worry about it. This was the entire concept of Blitzkreig. Envelope the enemy and then destroy them.

In your quest to dominate the enemy you must realize a few things with your forces. The German equipment is pretty much supperior to the Soviets. The biggest problem being that there is not all that much spare equipment laying around and not that many personel replacements either. Learn to use units to snipe enemy armor units. Also learn to use terrain to your advantage when moving AND when in the defense. Learn to use the edges of hexes as blocking terrain. Fields, wrecks, houses, trees, and basins ALL allow you to move in a somewhat protected mode. Most importantly--let support units take the damage and save as much of your core units a possible.

Finally, allow yourself to have fun. I know that when you are getting your butt kicked it doesn't seem much fun, but after a few games you WILL get better. Don't get mad. Learn from the mistakes and drive on. I can remember when we used to play box games ( Iknow that these were around when the Dino's walked the earth) a new player would get mad and frustrated and about 70% of the time would never return to the game. Let yourself have some fun and if you're really smart, you will keep a notepad handy to write down what works and what doesn't.
