Beastie Boys

  • Ill Communication (1994)

While I don't listen to a lot of rap or hip-hop, I like the Beastie Boys' style, especially on this album. Surprisingly, the best songs on this album are not the singles Sabotage, or Sure Shot, or their other songs of like nature, but rather the instrumentals. Even if someone doesn't like the Beastie Boys at all, I'm sure they could find enjoyment out of their instrumentals. Some of them have the feel of the "Taxi" theme song and are most relaxing. Throw in samples of chanting Tibetan Monks and the music turns spiritual. While there are one or two songs that are not very satisfying or harmonious to the ear, overall the album is great. Ill Communication seems like a transition for the Beastie Boys. Their music, themes, and ideas seemed to have matured in this album.
