Emerson, Lake & Palmer

  • Emerson, Lake, & Palmer (1971)
  • Trilogy (1972)
  • Brain Salad Surgery (1973)

Like so many other records that I've bought used, Brain Salad Sugery has a fantastic cover. The cover was painted by H.R. Giger. It's the real reason why I bought it. Anyway, to get to the music aspect of it... The best way that I can describe the music on Emerson, Lake, & Palmer is to say it sounds like a blend of the background music from the old Spider-Man cartoon and various sound effects from Dr. Who. From the average listerner's point of view this can never be good. However, I listen to it beause I happen to enjoy the old Spidey cartoon and Dr. Who. If you can't handle those two, this music is not for you. The self-titled album is the better of the three that I have. In this album they do a lot of classical type songs, mostly instrumental, with added organs and a lot of bass guitar over it all. They even do a cover of a song by the composer, Bartok, which they called Barbarian. My favourite song on this album is Knife Edge, but most people would recognize their more famous song Lucky Man.
