Minotaur

by Timothy Halligan

The wet, silvery clouds rose in the moonlight from his moist black nostrils, his breath becoming visible in the cold crisp air. His eyes, trained by seasons of hunting for food, searched out the movement across the field. Sniffing, he caught the sweet warm scent of a deer. Squinting, he made out the outline of a lone buck feeding off the shrubbery at the edge of the clearing he was hunting at. Tensing the muscles of his legs, he prepared for the charge.
"Mmwaaaaahnnnn!" he screamed as he propelled himself towards the deer. Startled, it raised its head and looked at the charging Minotaur. Pumping his massive legs, he raced towards the entranced deer. Pulling from his sheath a short sword, he prepared himself for the kill.
Suddenly, an image of the Goddess appeared before him. "Ra-Naul, wait. Not this creature," she commanded. As he crashed to a stop, Ra-Naul noticed the golden hue of the deer in the moonlight. Awakened from its trance, the deer stood up and bolted.
