The story is about a young man named Squall that is studying in a school called garden. Garden is not a normal school, is a military-style school where the students learn figthing abilities.

Squall wants to graduate from Garden, but the students have only four years to do it and the exam is very difficult. But more difficult is to join SeeD. SeeD is a selective group of brave soldiers, and Squall wants to be a member of this group.

The second main character is his counterpart:Laguna Loire. Laguna is a guy (guy, not gay) that left the army stuff for be a journalist. Laguna is a 27-years old man very friendly.

Squall and Loire live in different worlds and in certain point in the game they will meet. It seems that you will play as both characters. There are more characters, like Rinoa, a sweet young lady, Seifer (who hates Squall) and Zell, a young man friend of Squall.

I'm sure that the story of Final Fantasy VIII will be very complex, but, as Tetsuya Nomura (character designer) said, the main story of the game is love.
