Mariokart is 1-4 player racing game. There are 8 characters from the Mario games in the three game modes Mario Grand Prix, Verses, and Battle Mode in 16 regular corses and 4 battle courses.
The eight characters, Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Wario, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, and Bowser, are grouped into the 3 classes lightweight, middleweight, and heavyweight. The heavyweights (Donkey Kong, Wario, and Bowser) are tough and can't be thrown around by other carts and don't lose too much speed when turning without sliding. However, they don't accelerate well and slow down in grass or sand. You might want to avoid using them except in Battle Mode. The lightweights (Yoshi, Peach, and Toad) accelerate well, are a little faster than middle and heavyweights, and don't slow down on grass. However, they can get pushed around by middle and heavy weights and lose speed when turning without sliding (If you master the ability to slide, this shouldn't be a problem). The middle weights are the average of the two.
There are three modes, Verses, Mario Grand Prix, Time Trial, and Battle Mode. In Mario GP, you race againist 7 other players in 4 courses of any of the four cups. In Verses, you race in any one race againist a friend. In Time Trial, you must try to get the best times in the courses. You can also save your ghosts, mirror images of yourself, into the controllerpack. In Battle Mode, you try to hit each other with various objects until all your opponents have lost thier balloons.
There are 16 courses spread out over the four cups (Mushroom, Flower, Star, and Special. While racing the courses, you can make the engine 50cc, 100cc, 150cc, or extra if you can get it.
