In WCP the Terran Confederation has to struggle with a new alien menace created by the visual futurist Syd Mead, the man behind the looks for a film like Blade Runner.
Confed Intel has currently codnamed this new threat
"Nephilim", even if they don't know the true name
belonging to this race.
The alien fleet entered our galactic quadrant in the Kilrah
system near the remnants of the Kilrathi homeworld. It seems the
alien have used some kind of unknown anomaly to transit into
Confed space: station K-105 first detected a source of energy
that is now believed to be the result of the enemy transit into
the Kilrah sys. From then on, they attacked every kind of space
ship, station or ground target they could detect, both Terran and
Kilrathi. The Aliens used a jamming signal to isolate the attack
zone and captured every sentient creature they could get their
tentacles on.
Alien technology seems very advanced and can surely compete if
not surpass Confed's. Their ships have a rather organic
appearance, like a mixture of flesh and durasteel. Analisys on an
object that seemed to be part of an alien fighter ship, revealed
that it was composed by a complex chain of polymers giving it a
resistance factor 1.8 times better than Confed durasteel (the
substance resulted however a bit more fragile than durasteel).
The organic capabilities of the alien ships let these crafts form
"cluster" like ships, like the Stingray or the Skate (see Alien
ships section).
It is supposed, according to an ancient Kilrathi prophecy, that
these alien creatures are some kind "star gods" that
once challenged the Kilarthi race with "magical
weapons": the alien race, disgusted by the primitivity of
the Kilrathi, left them, swearing they would be back, once the
Kilrathi were worth the fight.
The prophecy then depicted two kind of destinies for the
Kilrathi: Tr'thrak is a sort of Armageddon in which the Kilrathi
would battle with the "star gods" winning or be
eroically destroyed by them; this destiny would result in case
the Kilrathi defeated every sentient race they met; if another
race was able to win the Kilrathi, the "star gods"
would be back to vanquish the remnants of the cat species and
whoever was able to defeat them. This destiny is referred to as
Kn'thrak, which means in our language "darkness" or
"evil".
It is now clear that the Aliens didn't expect to find us in the
Kilrah sys and its nearby solar systems, infact their first fleet
was just a scout fleet sent to prepare the advance for the bulk
of their ships. The destruction of the Warmhole gate that let
them in with an assault led by Confed pilots flying off the TCS
Midway, blocked the alien fleet in their own space ending the
first invasion.
The Warmhole gate itself resulted an artificial construction used
to mantain "open" the physical anomaly that connects
the alien's space with our region of the galaxy. The aliens will
be eventually back, since they still can use the anomaly as a
transition to reach us; it will be just a matter of time until
they'll be ready once again to take on the universe.
