River City Ransom

There was trouble. Trouble. Right there in River City. It was really only a matter of time before 'Slick' girlnapped your woman, even though he had his own immense-headed anime style girlfriend waiting for him at home. So now Alex and Ryan, the Delightfully Doughey Duo, must beat and humiliate Home Boys, Squids, and Foreign Exchange Students in their desperate quest to conquer River City. On the way, they'll challenge the best Artificial Intelligence the early 90's had to offer, eat lots of fast food at the spreading mini-malls, and risk life and limb in the parks, highways, and bottomless pits common to every city. And there's 8-bit nudity!

Do ya' need a chart?
River City Ransom
Genre:ActionChallenge/ReplayEasy
An action game with adventure/RPG elements. The artificial intelligence is basic... enemies attack hard and fast. Figuring out what items you want takes a bit. The replay benefits from having goodies to collect.
Play ControlGreatGraphics/SoundAverage
Punch and Kick. Push both buttons to jump. Double tap a direction to run. Now you're a master. This allows a surprising amount of technique, if you ask me. The characters are chubby, squishy Nintendo people. They have some pretty funny expressions. The sound didn't stand out, but it didn't annoy me either.
System: Nintendo
The Tips and Tricks

  • The artificial intelligence is different depending on enemy type. Home Boys mosey along and don't often carry weapons. Squids, Internationals, and later gangs are more aggressive and often have nastier weapons.

  • Jumping on fences and ledges is a good tactic. Enemies will wait for you to jump down.

  • The enemies' dialogue is amusing. They even lament the fact that you beat them over and over. Some chicken out and run away.

  • Foods and items can build your strength, punch, kick, weapon, throwing, defense, will, and agility. The more expensive, the more they add, but every little bit helps. They max out at 63. Eating food that adds Stamina when you're full boosts your Maximum Power, stopping at 127. Each box in your life bar represents 8 stamina.

  • Will functions differently than other stats. If your life is exhausted and your Will is 18 or better, 15 Will is subtracted and added to your life total. A willful hero finds the strength to go on.

  • Learn techniques from books: Stone Hands, Dragon Feet, and Grand Slam give you fast triple punches, kicks, and weapon attacks respectively. Acro Circus makes your jump an enemy leveling aerial somersault. Fatal Steps allows you to jump on downed enemies for damage. Javelin Man lets you throw a downed enemy so that he doesn't stop until he hits a solid object. The last two are probably more quirky than useful.

  • About two-thirds of the way through the tunnel is Merlin's Magic Shop... If you have money, push up against the wall to enter.

  • For the most part, you go forward and beat down the bad guys. Pay attention to the bosses the first time you beat them, however, because at one point you'll be told that you need to meet Blade in Sherman Park... that means you have to backtrack. Otherwise, you'll get to the end of the game and find yourself locked out of River City High.

  • My favorite weapon is the metal bar(I like to think of it as an aluminum bat). I take one wherever I go, once I find one. Next is the chain. In the hands of a Grand Slam user, a good weapon is hard to beat. Just watch your partner, as you can really pound them down with the extra range and damage.
