Kimura Fusaaki is a sorceror of no mean skill. Originally the
fourth son of a small samurai family on the island province of Iki,
he left home to seek his fortune. He found however that his meager
skill with swords was insufficient to earn him entry to any of the
famous schools of Bujutsu. With the southern country mostly at peace,
Kimura was unable to find more than occaisional employment. Several
months of sleeping under trees or in smelly heimin huts convinced him
that the life of a ronin was not for him either. Eventually he
swallowed his pride, and took a job as a yojimbo to an elderly
chinese ambassador in Kyoto. Despite the disparity in their status,
Kimura eventually warmed to his employer who was a cultured
gentleman. He taught Kimura Chinese and the two gradually became
friends. He also introduced Kimura to some of his acquaintances on
the periphery of the court and at last revealed his secret knowledge
of Dragon (fire) magic. Kimura discovered a natural aptitude for it,
and when his patron died, he took over his house and role in the
court. Mostly, he serves as an entertainer - weaving patterns from
fire for the amusement of the nobles. Occaisionally, he is called on
to help extinguish a runaway fire. Both of these tasks he secretly
feels are below him. In theory, he is always ready to use his magic
to defend the court - but in this role he has never been called
on.
Kimura dreams that one day his magical prowess will allow him to
enter the real life of the court and he is always ready to
demonstrate it, but his provincial birth and lack of polish condemn
him to a life on its periphery. Moreover, his "unnatural skills"
cause him to be an object of some suspicion - he is always watched by
the many spies in court for the slightest sign of dubious
behaviour.
