Father Sebastiano Pedro Fernandez
Father Sebastiano Pedro Fernandez is a tall (6'2"), dark-skinned
Portugese man. He keeps a well trimmed black beard and a long mane
of matching color. Sebastiano's eyes, deep cerulean, are stern, but
reveal the passion and love he holds for his Faith. Well built, he
is a strong man, a giant that usually is out of place in the Asian
world. He dorns a somewhat clean brown robe, and has taken to the
Chinese customs of cleanliness.
Sebastiano was born in the year 1509 of our Lord, in Odemira, to
the prosperous merchant and his wife who owned vineyards along the
river valley and in Maderias. Sebastiano seemed destined for a
comfortable, but simple life. At the age of 14, he was a tall,
gangly young man adept in swimming and wrestling. Sebastiano spent
most of his days in between the plantations his father owned on the
island and on the mainland, learning the skills needed to run the
estates and business.
With a father who considered himself well rounded and a man of the
arts, Sebastiano also found himself exposed to the many classics of
western literature and painting. He tried his hand at both poetry,
prose, and painting, but found it not to his liking. Work with his
hands inspired Sebastiano the most, and when he was either fishing
the azure waters off the coast of Portugal, or working in the
vineyards, Sebastiano felt himself most attuned to the world around
him. This hard work helped him soon fill out, making him a giant
among his fellow countrymen, who are not known for their height.
To Sebastiano's dismay, at the age of 18, he was sent off to in
Paris to study law. It was unexpected and to this day, Sebastiano
feels that it was God's providence. For in Paris, Sebastiano would
meet a certain Ignatius Loyola. In their first meetings, Sebastiano,
an impressionable young man, lost in a world of scholars, first came
aware of his role as a vassal to God. Ignatius found in Sebastiano a
willing, kind hearted young man, if somewhat susceptible to
manipulations, and turned him into what could be said one of the
first disciples of the Jesuit founder. They formed a strong bond
with each other over their stay in Paris, one that would last for
many years.
Caught up in his religious fervour, Sebastiano wrote home with his
desire to become a priest. The letters were not well received by his
father and Sebastiano was forced to finish out law school. At the
age of 22, Sebastiano came back to the bosom of his father, where he
would stay for another four years, taking the reigns of the Maderias
vineyard. On a trip back to Odemira for Christmas, though,
Sebastiano's ship was caught in a storm. There, clinging to the
railing on the foredeck, he saw a vision of a distant land, and felt
God's calling. When the storm passed and Sebastiano arrived home, he
cut all bonds from his family and left to enter the priesthood.
In time, Sebastiano would meet up again with his friend Ignatius.
When the Society of Jesus was formed in 1540, he was one of the first
60 members allowed to be of its ranks. An apt pupil, he was sent
Macao and the great land of China, where it was said millions waited
to be converted.
Sebastiano has been in Macao for 2 years. Once naive, he has
learned the politics that fester within the Church, and the ways in
which he is sought to be used by both the greedy merchants and his
own Brothers. Relatively, Sebastiano has avoided being caught up in
the politics. It is difficult.
Over all, though, he sees the potential that China holds. Still
narrow minded in his views, Father Sebastiano has taken to many
Chinese customs, such as washing his body, and he speaks Mandarin and
Cantonese fluently. He cares for the people of China, no matter how
much he sees many of them as heretics, and though he does not
understand them fully, he has the desire to.
