Sanjuro is a member of the Horimata family and therefore
distantly related to the Arai Clan. He became a shinto
priest while still quite young and rapidly rose in the
temple hierachy. Although his talent for sniffing out
dissent among his fellow monks earned him the support of
several powerful patrons within the temple, it also made him
many enemies. When the temple hierachy was up-ended after
the disastrous rebellions in the Kanto, and the subsequent
reprisals by several samurai lords against the temples that
had supported them, Sanjuro felt it was time to take a long
meditative retreat, preferrably somewhere far away from the
Kanto. He came to Ariki, where, concealing his past career,
he obtained the position of baliff on the strength of his
tenuous family connection. Although the position comes with
a house in the upper part of the town, he feels that his
talents are wasted there and would prefer some position in
the castle.
Sanjuro is slightly below middle height, but heavily
built, with a thick, corded neck and a craggy, forbidding
face. This has been accentuated since he shaved off his
beard and hair, to alter his appearance.
His personality is not abrasive, but he is stubborn -
even relentless. Although he might not appreciate it, he was
born to the job of Doshin.
