Shen Yang

Shen Yang is the owner of the dive simply called Shen Yang's, which lies sunk into the pilings of the Old Bridge. It is a drinking place for gang members and an opium den and is regarded as neutral territory, simply because Shen Yang will rough up and toss into the river anyone who tries to interfere with his business. Few people in the Old Bridge Market don't know the story of how Shen Yang once confronted an arrogant Shih, shattered his sword with his bare hands and then proceeded to kick him around the market, breaking all his ribs in the process.

Shen Yang is grossly fat, and wears his hair cut short at the front, but with the long pigtail of the northener. But concealed under all that blubber are strong muscles, and Shen Yang has proven greatly resistant to damage in the past.

Shen Yang was raised in a small village in the North, where he was trained in their family's traditional art of Stone Mountain Kung Fu by his father. Shen Yang was a dutiful student and even mastered the first of the esoteric arts. His Father hoped that as the oldest son, he would one day be the new head of their school. But one day, he agreed to a practice match with his younger cousin and was beaten soundly three times. Shamed, his father threw him out. Shen Yang wandered southwards eventually ending up in Canton, where his acquaintance with a captain ofthe city guard introducd him to a safer and more lucrative living than beating people up for money - selling opium.

These days Shen Yang sits in his bar, slowly eating and drinking and keeping an eye on things. If he has to fight, his technique is simple. If his opponents are unarmed, he delays and takes a defensive stance (levels in DCV). After they have attacked, he changes to an offensive stance and tries to kick their legs out from under them. Next phase, he then stamps on them when they are down (HKA, aimed at the torso, -2 OCV). If his opponents are armed, he adopts a more aggressive stance (levels in OCV), delays until they attack and then blocks. If he blocks successfully, he will use Stone Fingers to break their weapon. Once all of his opponents are unarmed, he then proceeds as for unarmed opponents.

Notes on Stone Mountain Esoteric Technique: Stone Fingers. This is a closely guarded secret of the Stone Mountain school of Kung Fu. Stone Mountain school practicioners have long known that many warriors rely on their weapons. If their weapon is removed, they are almost helpless. Masters of this technique can deliver concentrated ki with just a sharp tap of their finger tips. While it will simply bounce a flexible object away (and therefore does little harm to living flesh), inflexible objects cannot bend away from the force and will often shatter like struck glass. If one uses the regular focus rules, most weapons have only 3 or DEF and are ridiculously easy to break. Hence we use DEF and BOD for weapons based on the tables in the "Environment" section of the HSR. This gives most swords 9 DEF and 2 BOD and staves 4 DEF and 3 BOD. Most other weapons can be extrapolated from these if needed.
