Wargames

I love games, but forget all the shoot'em ups, they're just window dressing on Space Invaders, and you can have Pictionary, et al, while you're at it; I want to analyze a board full of pieces, make some choices about interacting with other people's pieces, and then let's roll the dice and find out who's choices were better. Give me Ogre/GEV, Squad Leader, Scrabble, Illuminati NWO, Napolˇon (the block game!), Cosmic Encounter, Awfule Green Things, Kingmaker, and in a pinch Chess or Diplomacy, though I will surely lose.

Here are a couple of scans from the golden age of a company called Metagaming, around 1980. These are posted here on the safe assumption that no one minds, if anyone does please let me know, and they'll come right down.

The cover of my first issue of The Space Gamer. The articles and ads herein convinced me to buy everything Metagaming made...

The inside of the back cover. I spent a lot of hours with these two games, and was rewarded with an early understanding of probability. I actually own two copies of each, and two copies of the sequel to each, plus the advanced versions...

These two were designed by Steve Jackson, IMHO the greatest game designer ever. He now has his own game company, Steve Jackson Games,

This is the outside of the back cover. I didn't play these games as much, though both are good. These were designed by Howard Thompson, who has since disappeared from wargaming.

The cover of The Space Gamer 14, a scene from Chitin I that became the cover of the second edition. The bugs are creepy and yellow's not my favorite color, but that's a great painting.

There was a recent discussion that maligned this poor gargoyle from the original cover of MicroGame #3 - Melee. I put this scan up to set the record straight.

Can't imagine why it might be important, but here's the counter for this page...
