"Roch2"
By Pascal Rouaud

In Roch2, Pascal continues his excellent trend of making fun and very detailed city maps. Roch2 has 6 secret places, bumper cars, realistic buildings, and one of the coolest Duke cars of all time (above). Some of the places, like the restaurant above, are best appreciated when seen full-screen. Also look for the wild rock music equipment in one of the secret rooms.

"Fruit Loops"
By C3PO

Duke was about to enjoy some Fruit Loops when EDF called, asking him to kick the butts of an alien force invading a government-owned building in the Texas desert. As the text file says, there's one room (above) where you must walk to the door to make the C-4 charge appear, before blowing it up with the plunger.

This is a professional-quality map, made by the lead level designer for the Starship Troopers TC. Figuring out how to get into the building is the first puzzle. Once there, you follow an intertwining and explosive path through a well-detailed building.

"City of Screams"
By NutWrench

City of Screams is one of the very few maps that use the unofficial Sector Effector 26 (escalators). This special effect, though not extravagant, is new to most of us.

This medium-sized map is a nicely laid-out city area with great texturing. Gritty alleyways, colorful neon signs, a graffiti-strewn subway, and steel fences make an all-around interesting urban jungle.

"The Final Confrontation"
By 3D Visions

Wow! 3D Visions is an amazing team. The seven main maps in this episode are huge, professional, and action-packed.

The Final Confrontation is quite challenging, and well worth the download. The Naval Complex map may be too clever though. It has switches that are far away from the doors they operate... I never did solve the map completely.

Among the other levels are a posh hotel, a great amusement park, and a pyramid. Another map takes place on a large expertly-made train (above, left). The episode also includes two new MIDI's and a new ending screen.

As usual, the bigger maps will take a toll on your framerate, but they were usually okay on my P133. Otherwise try running in pure DOS.

Visit the TFC home page to get patches for the Mac and the Atomic Edition.

For best file transfer results, download one file at a time, and don't use your PC for other tasks during the transfer. This is sometimes necessary when downloading large files from Geocities.

"Research Facility"
by Maarten Pinxten

Maarten Pinxten is yet another talented map maker to introduce to this page. Research Facility is a fine example of his interesting mapmaking style. This is a small to medium map, with lots of new details and good textures.

"Lair"
By Rob West

It's about time Lair made it to this page. Rob West, who also made "Slick", is a master of originality. Almost every time you turn the corner you see details you've never quite seen before.

One of the original things is near the beginning of the map. You're pitted against a boss who completely outguns you. Instead of defeating him with firepower, you have to use your wits to trick him! (The text file gives a clue.) Later on you'll come back with serious ammo and face him on better terms.

"Kenedy"
By Dduge

Dduge has made a map that benefits from his apparently foreign perspective on things (Lithuanian). Despite the poor title, this map is fun and offers some new ideas. It's also very explosive, and makes good use of dark areas. It's not the biggest map, but surprisingly tough with some interesting action. His secret is to put you into tight places where you can't run from the "baddies" and shoot them at the same time.

"Sorry for the framerate", says the text file. On my P133, the rate got choppy at the end, and during some of the big explosions.

"The Starlite Project"
By Stranger

Starlite is a top secret project guarding a stolen alien transporter portal (above, right). You are the lone defender of Earth when aliens plan to use the Portal to attack us.

Starlite has some of the best light and shadow effects ever in a Duke3d map, including excellent use of cycler lights. Also there's a cool new effect at the end of the game.

Note, the text file says that the frame rate may be too slow on a 486 computer. It also mentions a .con file that makes a small enhancement to the lighting. The author didn't put it in the zip, but you don't need it.

"Roch"
By Pascal Rouaud

It's not often that you get to play a map as fun as Roch. There's continual action and lots of places to explore in this big map. This town is rich with details and great realism, right down to the sprouts of grass growing between the sidewalk cracks! There are lots of cool surprises and a ton of secret areas.

Note, the price for all these details is the lower frame rate. The map got very choppy at times on my Pentium 133 but never crashed. The author says to run the game in DOS (outside of Windows) if you've got less than a P200.

"Slaughter House 2"
By Akimbo

There's plenty of fun, creativity, and action in this great map. The rooms are shaded well, detailed, and refreshingly original. My little pictures above can't do justice to all of the interesting places I found in this map.

"Hell Station"
By Pipeline

Here's a map that excels in the space action genre! The ship has got lots of great shading and a cool design.

"Legends (1&2)"
By Mike Beaulieu

This is a series of two excellent maps, Legends and Legends2.

"Legends" features ancient ruins taken over by aliens. The environment is detailed and realistic. There are secret walls, tons of effects and even some altered bad guys.

"Legends2" is set in a dense jungle at night. The level is dark and there are a lot of aliens hiding in the shadows! It's full of ambushes, traps, exploding walls, relentless enemies, and a some other cool items like a crashed Fighter-jet and a very dangerous area resembling the Ewok village (shown above, right).

"Prelude"
By Jim Semkiw

Duke Nukem finds the Government's Secret Warehouse where they have kept "the GATE"!

This fun map takes you back and forth between 1989 and 2001. You get to fight the aliens that existed in each year. It's interesting to see how the rooms of this government building have evolved and changed over time.

"Dharga"
By Tamas Kovacs

Dharga is visually great, with lots of originality. It's bright and colorful (unlike all the gray, gloomy maps out there), and has many interesting places to explore.

However, it has big wide open spaces with hundreds of surfaces, making the frame rate very slow on my Pentium 133! One player with a Pentium 100 said the game even locked up. (You can probably fix this by hitting the minus key a few times to reduce the rendering area, but who wants to do that?)

But if your computer can handle it, Dharga is a high quality map with plenty of creativity, puzzles, and some tough challenges that will keep you playing a long time.

"Aztec"
By Robert Travis

This map is for maze lovers. Duke has traveled deep into the Amazon jungle to discover a long lost Aztec city.

The Duke Nukem game only has a few textures that can be used for ancient buildings, so creators of such maps sometimes end up with repetitive, boring rooms. Not so here. If you enjoy mazes, you will find lots of nicely-made twisting passages and waterways. Of course ancient rooms didn't have switches or computers or most other items available in the Duke art repository, so the rooms aren't very detailed. But the map makes up for that, in maze design.

"Dr. Doom"
By Dukebert

This map's based on a small Doom level (Doom2, map 4: "The Focus"), to which Dukebert has added more rooms to make it bigger. There's one very cool place that I won't show a picture of... I'll leave it as a surprise. Other than that, it has the same look and feel as many other Doom and Duke3D maps, so it isn't groundbreaking, but it happens to be well done. The building has an interesting layout, with several secret areas. I found it challenging and fun.

"Confession"
By Tim Conneen

The aliens have captured Duke and are trying to force him to confess to slaughtering all those women-in-alien-bondage, so they can execute him. But Duke has another idea: he'll make his confession, all right, and for his penance he'll blow the stinkin' place to bits!

This is a very excellent map. It has too many cool things to mention, but here's a few: there's a door that opens and closes a new way (like an accordian), a cool house that's half underwater, challenging puzzles, and a great amount of detail and refreshing originality. The cards are very tough to find, but the game includes a Spoilers viewscreen that shows you where they are.

The author has also created "Stupid SE 0 Tricks" (below).

"Stupid SE 0 Tricks"
By Tim Conneen

This tutorial shows some newly discovered special effects that are just great. (Actually they were discovered in 1997, but I have not seen anyone using them much, so they are essentially new.) Without changing the CON files, you can implement these effects in your maps: horizontal crushers, gaping pits that grow or shrink, stretching doors, shifting passageways, and whatever else you can come up with! The how-to text file tells you how, and a sample map demonstrates the special effects.

"Oasis"
By Nathan Boren

Here's a map filled with several interesting puzzles. I questioned whether to include the map on my page, because it has some superficial drawbacks: the rooms lack detail, so they aren't realistic, and the map is not as big as most others. However, those things didn't stop me from enjoying the interesting challenges, so I found the game fun enough to include here.

If you have trouble finding the cards, here's a help page which will tell you how to get them.

"Himalay2"
By Jonathan Cacy

Duke, on top of Mt. Everest, must make his way down the treacherous slopes and through a plane wreck to search for the portal back home. This map is fun and nicely original. It's smaller than most maps, but has lots of interesting twists and good surprises.

"Warz"
By Andras Piroska

This is probably the best level I've ever played in the category of non-stop action! It's very well designed with lots of explosions, challenges, and cool buildings. The action keeps going, so there's never a dull moment. It's definitely not for wimps!

Because of all the action, this map has a lower framerate than most. It was fine on my P133 though. The author recommends at least a P100 with 16MB RAM.

Thanks to Mars at The Bug Team for pointing out this map and others.

"Darkgate"
By Aaron Barber

Duke has wandered past a thick redwood forest, and found his way into Dark Gate. This is a land of castles, a dark maze, a hellish underworld, and a paradise floating in the sky. Dark Gate is a fun, well-designed map with lots to explore.

"Steve's Episodes 1 & 2"
By Steve Long

These levels were selected for publication in PC Gamer magazine. They are 15 levels in 2 episodes and there's a lot to do in them! Some of the levels are truly huge. Steve makes good use of architecture, realism, and detail. There's lots of exploring and a good deal of innovative ideas, including:

  • An underground military facility
  • Great churches
  • Cemetery
  • Launch pad facility
  • Sky train
  • Space stations
  • Gothic mansion with lightning effect, ghosts and traps
  • Disguised switches and viewscreens

  • Reflection of bridges in water
  • Clear water in bath tub
  • Large whirlpool in lake that will suck Duke down

  • Hospital
  • Funeral home
  • Laundramat
  • Beer factory

  • Stonehenge

  • You sink a ship... The ship is upside down, and there are 7 layers to the ship, all upside down.

You could literally study these episodes to learn how to make good maps.

Note: Because the files are big, you should not have other open Internet sessions. They can interfere with large downloads and make the zips appear invalid. If that happens, close all other windows and try again.

" The Damned Dam "
By Jawon Lee

There's no profanity in the title - this dam really is damned, or so it seems when the alien horde gets you in their sights. This is a refreshingly original and detailed level. If you enjoy a strong mental and physical challenge, this will either destroy you or make you stronger.

This level is big and ambitious. You've got a swarm of aliens and a whole lot of ground to cover. You won't breeze through this one in 10 minutes! There are some switches that operate far away doors, so get ready for some searching. The author also presents some perplexing obstacles, so pay attention and use that brain for something more than a hat rack. The author doesn't make it easy - just big and good.

Because of a couple difficult places in the game, I prepared a screen that gives a walkthrough for those parts. Feel free to read it if you have a hard time finding the blue key or using the multi-switch for the 1-2-3 gates. Otherwise you're on your own.

Note: This level, at times, requires a powerful computer. It ran well on my P133 but got choppy a couple times.

" GODZILLA "
By Thomas L. Harrell

This is a cityscape with several references to the 1998 movie Godzilla. Large footprints, a gash in the building from his tail, and an underground burrow with egg chamber are all from the movie.

This is an outstanding level, very detailed. It has fewer monsters than usual, but then this game is best played as a 2-4 player Dukematch. However there are plenty enough monsters to make a single player game fun. Take your time and look at all the details.

Note: This level, at times, requires a fast computer for a good frame rate.

" SLICK "
By Rob West

A battle on an oil rig! This game has incredible detail. You're not likely to see a better design. It's worth it for the realism alone. This game is original and fun.

It's challenging to figure out how to open some of the doors. If you get stuck, here's a walkthrough that I made. It has the answers so you can get through Slick.

" TIME COP "
By Philip

Duke finds himself warped into another time, in a secret time launch facility. He travels back to an 1870 ghost town and then to the future remains of an L.A. city block. Great special effects.

Note: This level, at times, requires a fast computer for the best effect.

" IMPERIAL "
By Brian Wolfe

You're on a ship docking with an Imperial Star Destroyer. Your objective is to destroy all opposition and escape in Vader's Imperial Shuttle. The Millennium Falcon is hidden in one of the secret places.

"BOBA FETT "
By Mike Beaulieu

The setting is an alien arctic base featuring several unique areas, including realistic icy caves and great renditions of an Imperial Walker and Bobafett's slave ship.

" REAL CITY "
By Jason Mclauchlin

Realcity contains a lot of totally new ideas. Jason dropped the overused Duke city locations like the sushi bars. He added new ideas, like bowling alleys, furniture stores, go karts, mini golf, pawn shops, health clubs, and a car crash.

This level is very innovative, detailed, and realistic. It has 2 big levels, Realcity and Morecity, plus Dukematch and Atomic versions. A very extensive HTML hint file will help you if you need it.

To play the game, run realcity.bat.

" AQUAPARK "
By Jason F. Mclauchlin

A popular L.A. waterpark (with serious security measures) is secretly spawning aliens. So night watchman Duke Nukem has plans to restructure the management!

This is an excellent and imaginative simulation of a fun water park transformed into an alien nightmare. It's one of the most creative maps I've found. Also includes a Dukematch version.

" ORION PRIME "
By Bob Masters

On the planet Orion Prime, alien scum have stolen a powerful technology that could be doomsday for Earth. Duke's got to blow them out of the sky before they can deliver it to the alien space fleet!

These 2 BIG levels have:
  • New custom artwork
  • A riddle to solve
  • Variety: lots of different kinds of rooms
  • Not just aliens: In level 2, there are whole space ships for you to attack and destroy!
  • A story plot, with a good start and a climactic final scene
  • A firing range to test your skills
  • A detailed grocery store
  • Some humor
  • A good mix of exploration and in-your-face action scenes
  • A very dangerous holodeck
  • An HTML help file, with hints, answers, and locations of secret rooms

To play each level, run orion1.bat or orion2.bat.

Note, these are my first 2 maps, and the textures aren't quite right in a few places. I definitely prefer the 2nd map... Both maps are possible to solve, but looking back on them, I now see that they're too tough... too many aliens spawning everywhere. That can get annoying.

Sorry, due to the alterations, this map does NOT work with Atomic Edition (Plutonium Pak).

" BIZARRE "
By Bob Masters

This is the level that breaks all the rules!

In the wilderness near Area 51, Duke finds a portal to an alternate universe, devoted to pretty much everything that's wierd.

I wanted to make this level completely different from anything we've ever seen! It includes new artwork too.

At the center of this universe is a very unearthly building like the one in those great Escher paintings, where gravity is going in 3 different directions.

Inside, the doors lead off to nine other bizarre places. See how many scientific laws are broken!
