Magic in "Yvain, the Knight with the Lion"

Yvain in Battle

Introduction

This page will attempt to show how magic was used in Chretien De Troyes' Yvain, the Knight with the Lion. It will discuss how some of the different types of magic used in Yvain and how exactly they influenced both the characters and the plot. This page assumes a single reading of the work Yvain, but no additional background is required. The specific magic items that will be covered are the magical fountain that produced the thunderstorm, the ring of invisibility Lunette gives Yvain, and the magic balm the Lady of Norison gives Yvain to restore his sanity. Although there is certainly more magic within Yvain, this page will limit itself to these three magic items and discuss each in detail.

Notes

This page was created as a final project for a Brown University course, English 15 Section 2, Medieval Romance and Modern Fiction taught by Professor Lauryn Mayer. It is an excellent course on medieval literature and arthurian legend and I encourage everyone at Brown to take it (and no I'm not just saying this so she'll like my final project more).
