Notes
The gift of magery has appeared in the Martiniatta family on a numbe of occasions. This gave the family a bit of wealth and influence from time to time, but Rosario's branch of the family had seen little of for some generations now. Still, they took the trouble to have their children tested for it and Rosario's turned up quite easily.

He was apprenticed to such wizards as they could find, but the lad quickly outstripped these hedge wizards in ability. He'd mastered the spells they had, but he had no real training, many unrelated spells but nothing solid to build a wizardly career with.

That changed when he was 14 or so. He detected something magical about a tree he passed walking through the woods. Investigating, he found the tree to have an illusion over it. What appeared to be a living tree was a dead hollowed out one.

Behind the illusion there was a leather bag, containing 3 swords in their scabards. Two of the swords and one of the scabards were magical. The third sword was not magical but a beautiful weapon with very good pictures engraved on it.

A week earlier a group of travelers on a pilgrimage were attacked by a monster and two dozen bandits. (Actually an illusionist and 10 bandits but who's counting?) Outnumbered (HAH!) and out gunned, the guards surrendered and the pilgrims were robbed of their belongings, and these three swords were the prize catches of the loot.

Rosario was extremely lucky. There were two watchers guarding the tree. One had fallen asleep while the other one had answered the call of nature due to some bad food he'd eaten. By the time he finished purging his bowels and returned to wake his partner, Rosario had been gone a good 5 minutes.

His reward was meagre in terms of money. The pilgrims had little cash left after being robbed. However, they had connections and friends back home in Lonot, and as Rosario's explanation of how he found the swords identified him as a mage, they offered to get him proper training as a wizard back home.

It took another year and a half, but they kept their promise.

Rosario is presently the forensics expert for the Duke of Natrava, and part of His Grace's polizia. Most of his work is magical in nature, summoning the spirits of murder victims and interrogating them, using History and Ancient History on items that appear to be evidence, etc.

Rosario graduated 19th in his class at Santo Giovanni College at the University de Lonot across the Sea of Comani but returned to his native Natava after obtaining his Masters. (Bachelors in Alchemy, Masters in Thaumautology.) He turned down several lucative offers in Lonot to do this.

His reasons are simple: Stefano, baronet of Milin, Coroner to the Duke, is both limited in competence and getting on in years. The office has traditionally been a place to give title and income to younger sons of favored nobles when said sons are not fit for soldiering or the priesthood.

The new Duke, Patrizio, was angered when his polizia failed to catch an assassin who killed two of his friends four years ago, or more specfically, when the assassin bribed his way out of captivity and the superiors of the officers failed miserably in covering up the officer's misdeeds.

At the time, the man next in line for the title, Patrizio's cousin, Michel, had no specific interest in creating a scandal concerning his father's agency of justice. Patrizio could do little but fume.

Then Michel went to war and came back spitted on an enemy lance. The old Duke's health took a turn for the worse when the news of his only child's death reached him, and the old man died less than two months later.

Patrizio all but declared war on his polizia, rooting out coruption with a vengeance.

The restructuring of the polizia into a genuine police force was something Rosario favored in general and was ideal for his purposes. The training he'd just finished would help solve crimes, and would bring him to the Duke's attention.

Rosario has made a practice of going through unsolved cases Stefano was involved with. He hasn't solved all of them, but he has done enough to embarrass the baronet on several occasions.

Stefano misgauged Rosario's intentions. Not even considering the possibility that the lower born Rosario is after HIS job, he believes Martiniatta is the chess piece of another noble at the Duke's court being used to harm him.

As a result, he's been spending a lot of time and effort trying to discover who Rosario's secret patron is. Rosario learned of these efforts recently and is trying to leave evidence that will point towards the husband of Baron Leonetti's daughter. If Stefano gets involved in some sort of "retaliation" intrigues against this man, the more likely his job performance will continue to decline and the better Rosario's chances.

Rosario wants this post because it has a fair amount of prestige even with incompetents like Stefano running things, pays fairly well, and offers TWO villas at opposite ends of the Duchy as well as a town house near the Duke's Manor. He wants his parents to live in that sort of luxury and bask in the limelight of being the mother and father of the Coroner.

Alfredo more or less pushed his widowed daughter and friend into marriage, but it seems to have worked.
