Discovered by David Wonn. There is another way of bypassing the long u-turn that is much more difficult to pull off, but is much more spectacular. First, proceed to the area in between the second set of item boxes and the first hill (ie. the stretch before the stone wall that you jump over in the trick above.) What you first want to do is start a wall jump (on the wall to your left) about 1/4 of the way between these item boxes and the hill, so you should probably begin your turn left just after you cross the item boxes.
Continue your wall jump until you reach the crest of the mountain (ie. where the mountain becomes relatively flat), and with one final jump, get up on top. Ideally, you want your final jump to leave you as close as possible to the seam that connects the two polygons below you (you can see a line where the two polygons come together, and this is where you want to aim your kart.) Reaching the crest is easy, but getting up on top at the right place is not. If you are going fast enough before you start your wall jump, your momentum should carry you over, but you can also boost your odds of making it by using a mushroom right when you get to the crest, which should pop you onto the top. Now, depending on what part of the mountain top
you touch first, one of a number of things could happen:
- You could fall through the top into a pool of water. If you are doing this a lot, you are not performing the trick in the right place.
- You could start spinning in place (the camera will rotate around you), and eventually Lakitu will put you back down on the same side of the mountain. Obviously, this is no good either.
- You could start rolling left (all the while staying on top of the mountain, though), and eventually start spinning in place. This means that you almost got it right, but you started your wall jump a little too early, or your final jump placed you too far to the left of the polygon seam.
- You could start rolling forward (into the screen.) This is the result that you want, as Lakitu will not interfere. Eventually, the texture below you will turn white, then brown again, before you finally fall off the mountain, but on the other side! You usually will end up in the area right before the three small hills that lead to the finish line.
Obviously, this shortcut will not save you much time unless you get good enough to perform it at will, and even then, it saves about as much time as the trick above, but it is REALLY fun to do once you master it, and if you fluke out, you can land on top of another kart as you leave the mountain, which can really disorient them.
