Chapter 5 - Rumours Around Town

The posse gather rumours from around town and begin their hunt for the head vampire, learning about Whittakers midnight deals in the process

Around town

If the posse has not yet visited the Vampires ranch then not a lot happens this chapter, the posse will most likely be questioning Jacky O Neill in the evenings (he stays in his room during the day) or asking about Bobby Whittaker, who also stays in during the day.

Owing to the recent deaths in town, Sheriff Wilson being the latest, townsfolk are starting to up and leave, moving away to stay with relatives or friends out of town. The townsfolk fear for their lives and talk of Vampires is driving them mad, they cannot be disuaded from leaving. The only folks who stay are John Greely, Thom (his Ghoul), Father Sian York - the priest, Deputy Weeks, Nolan Edwards, Bobby Whittaker + his gunslinger companion Romo Sanchez, Jacky O Neill, and a handful of stubborn townsfolk.
If the posse get talking to any of the fleeing townsfolk (or those stobborn few who remain) have them all make a Persussion (5) roll (or whatever aptitude is most appropiate to the posse's form of questioning). For each person who scores a success, and every raise after that they learn one of the following rumours:

• Sheriff Wilson was killed by Vampires - TRUE
• Bobby Whittaker had something to do with Sheriff Wilsons death. The two of them never got on with each other - FALSE and TRUE (they really didn't get on)
• Jacky O Neill is one of The Damned (a Vampire) because he never sleeps at night! - FALSE
• Sally Anne (the murdered whore) must have risen from the grave and killed the Sheriff! - FALSE
• Nolan Edwards may be a raving lunatic but he is the only hope the town has - MAYBE
• Bobby Whittaker is a spy for the USA, that's why he always leaves at night on "secret missions", he killed the sheriff because the sheriff knew about this - FALSE
• Bobby Whittaker is a Vampire, that's why he stays in all day and paints his bedroom windows black to keep the sun out - FALSE, but he does have his bedroom windows painted black to stop the sun blistering his skin
• Those three lads from the ranch are all bloodsucking Vampires, they want to kill everybody in town - TRUE

So, once most of the rumours can be milked from the fleeing populace of Thomaswell the posse are going to be stuck, they'll have realised Jacky O Neil probably isn't on of the Legion of the Damned by now (through whatever testing they use!) and can only follow up leads with Bobby Whittaker from all they've heard of his midnight antics (read next chapter) or visit the Vampires ranch (previous chapter). It's either that or moon around town looking for clues. If the posse spend any significant time around Greely's Saloon at night maybe you should let on that he's not what he seems, he certainly is keeping his eye on them - in fact if they get too close to discovering who he is then read chapter 7.

Hearing most of the rumours: 1 white chip (each)
Figuring out Jacky is not a vampire: 1 white chip
Figuring out Bobby Whitaker is not a vampire: 1 red chip
Somehow determining that Greely is a vampire: 1 blue chip
