The posse follow Whittaker on one of his meeting and learn who he is, possibly getting into a confrontation with his mexican gunsmuggling friends
That evening Bobby Whittaker will leave town with his Gunslinger companion, Romo Sanchez, to meet with Mexican gun runners about 5 miles south of town. The plan is for the Mexicans to bring across the border a wagon of 300 rifles which Whittaker buys for $2000, Romo will then take the wagon north to sell to CSA guerilla groups and bandits at a later date. Whittaker carries the money in a leather bag.
You should try to convince the posse that Whittaker should be followed (either Nolan Edwards will ask them to, or Deputy Weeks, if alive, will want to because he suspects Whittaker of killing the Sheriff and wants help) as he may well be up to no good, if the posse are stubborn and don't want to then fine, they will miss out on any bounty they may earn in this chapter
Romo and Bobby leave Whittakers fine house at dusk and immediatly gallop west out of town, later changing direction south. It isn't too hard to track them in the desert sand, requiring a Trackin'(7) check to find and follow the trail quickly, failure just means the posse takes time following the trail and arrives late (change the upcoming encounter accordingly). Whittaker can't be followed by sight because it's dark (unless any posse members are able to see in the dark) and if Whittaker suspects he is being followed he rides harder and sets up an ambush later in some rocks. If the posse successfully track Wittaker and are not discovered then he eventually stops 5 miles south of town at a small creek and makes camp in some rocks - lighting a fire as a signal to the mexicans when they arrive.
The posse would be wise to lie low and keep an eye on him, he lights a fire so this shouldn't be too hard, if they want to get close enough to hear anything he might say then a Sneak check is needed (he talks only a little to Sanchez - in Mexican). After half an hour read the following;
Just when you think that Whittaker has lead you on a wild goose chase you hear the sounds of horses coming from south of your position. You notice several lanterns in the distance headed your way, all swaying with the breeze. As the lights get nearer you see a half dozen riders and a wagon in solemn procession, the wagon is covered and the riders faces are hiden under large sombreros. They approach Whittakers camp and come to a silent halt about 20 yards from him. Whittaker and his friend are now on their feet. They seem to have been expecting these newcomers, although what is in the wagon is anybodies guess...
Try to play up the fact that whatever is in the wagon is obviously important, Whittaker himself enters the wagon and then returns, seemingly happy, he then shows the Mexicans the contents of his leather bag and they count the money. They too seem happy and after a celebratory tequilla eveybody will be on their way. Romo intends to take the wagon north while Whittaker will return to town at full pace.
Now, if there are any southern lawmen amongst the posse then they will no doubt want to intervene, they can smell a rat and will feel it's time to kick some but, similarly if Deputy Weeks is with the posse he will probably not be able to contain himself any longer, he's young and hotheaded and is dying to confront Whittaker. Also don't be shy to remind Curious heroes of their Hindrances...
If this chapter is played before the posse have dealt with the ranch Vampires, or if any escaped, then they have also followed Whittaker here in search of fresh blood (Greely has warned them away from town after the unnecessary killing of the Sheriff) and will attack with guns blazing from their hidden position in the rocks, they will take Whittaker and co by suprise and, if the posse do not intervene, they will finish off the lot of them and drink their blood. This will clear up any doubts the posse had of whether or not the ranch hands were Vampires or not. If this occurs and the posse intervene then have the Vampires escape back to the ranch if you can, if the battle is joined half way through then the Mexicans will turn on the posse, believing them to be in league with the vampires.
If the Vampires have already been dealt with then Whittakers meeting goes according to plan, if the posse leave him alone then he returns home to bed. If they do him over and question him (he folds easily enough under pressure) then the posse learns he is not a vampire but a gun runner - he will tell them all about his skin condition too.
