Bubsy 3D
PlayStation * Accolade

Review by Jonathan Ratcliffe
5.0

I was expecting more from the sequel to Bubsy the Bobcat's first game on the Super NES and Genesis. While the first game offered solid, sprite-based platform action, Bubsy 3D tries to be Super Mario 64, and fails miserably.

I won't bore you with the story of Bubsy 3D, but let me just say that it's quite cute. It's really too bad that it's hampered by such a poorly designed game. Gameplay? While the first Bubsy was a side-view platformer with long levels and traditional hop-on-the-baddie's-head play mechanics, the sequel has the same objective, but in a polygon world. The goal of each level is basically to get to the end -- that's it. Along the way, the player can grab floating "Atoms" and fire them at enemies. Platforms float through the air for you to jump from, but they don't offer much of an incentive. Your best bet is to just stay on the ground and head for the level's exit.

This doesn't sound so bad until you actually get to play the game. It controls so horribly that you can't hardly land on an enemy, even with a great deal of practice. Forget the fact that they don't even move! They fire at you too, and the hit detection is so astonishingly off, that you get hit even if you're in the air. The camera stays so closely behind Bubsy that it must look down when you jump, just to see the enemy that you're trying to land on. But not only is the control horrible, but it's also awkward as well. While Super Mario 64 (must everything be compared like this?) allows you to push in any direction to move, even away from Mario (in which he will turn around), pressing down in Bubsy 3D moves Bubsy backwards slowly. The player must hold left and right to turn Bubsy around, then press up to move forward. This makes turning a different direction quite difficult -- wait, make that extremely difficult! Remember Combat for the Atari 2600? Bubsy controls a great deal like the tanks in that game. Does this sound like fun or what?! And don't even try to jump from platform to platform.

If I need to give you any other reason not to buy -- or even rent -- I could mention the poor music, lengthy load times (more that that of most PlayStation games), and Bubsy's voice that is amazingly more annoying than that of the first Bubsy. While the voice in the first game was cute (although annoying after repeated playing), the sequels voice is pull-your-hair out annoying. Run! Hide!

Heed my warning. Bubsy 3D should not be played for any reason except for something to laugh at. Get some extra dough, rent it, and laugh at it with some friends. Now that's what I call fun!
