When I first tried Cool Boarders 4 for the PlayStation and messed around with it a while, it didn’t take me long to realize that this was not going to be the most creative, interesting, or fun snowboarding game I will ever play.... I tried the season mode first and placed fourth place overall, scoring poorly in all the trick modes. At first try it is impossible to pull off any tricks because the instruction manual neglects to tell you that you have to press and hold the X button before jumping. After figuring this out, however, performing tricks becomes difficult to mind bogglingly easy. Basically you just have to press a lot of different buttons while in the air. On the half pipe I scored in one run what the second place person scored in his three runs combined! In season mode they put too much emphasis on the trick modes. If you do horrible in the races and score high in the trick modes you will place easily around first. If you recall in 1080 Snowboarding for N64 there was a mode in which you do a trick that it told you to do in order to advance to the next trick. It is called Trick Master in Cool Boarders 4 and is a complete and total rip off of the 1080 Snowboarding version, but with a few less features. For instance, instead of getting a choice between half pipe and free style it just dumps you off in a freestyle type course. There are no continues in Cool boarders 4 like there was in 1080 Snowboarding. Let's just hope that 989 Studios realizes how poor this game was and that each Cool Boarders game seems to get progressivly worse and worse as they go up.
