PO'ed
PlayStation * Accolade

"Oh, another Doom clone." That's what I said when I heard about this one, but PO'ed sports some unique things that others in this genre haven't, and with nothing overly wrong, I found it quite enjoyable. Let me explain why.

PO'ed is like Doom -- except the concept went directly from morbid to silly. Your initial weapon is a frying pan, and later you can get all sorts of strange weapons, including a Drill, Flame Thrower, Wailer, Meat Seeker, Rocket Launcher, and the strange Missile-Cam. After firing a shot with this one, the player has a view from the nose of the missile. You can guide yourself around in all directions too. We must have spent nearly thirty minutes just playing around with this one. But wait, there is more unusual, humorous things about PO'ed that make it worth a look. The enemies are laughable. The main one is a "walking butt" that fires something at you (I'll let you guess what it is). We also have blobs, flying enemies, things with wheels, invisible enemies, turret guns, etc. The list goes on and on. Wait...flying enemies? Yeah, you heard me right. What good are they if the character can't fly? Well, he can! A few levels into the game you gain use of a jetpack, which can be used to take the adventure to the air. It sounds somewhat difficult to control, but it isn't. This ability to fly is the best part of PO'ed. I'm prepared to see another game company reproduce the concept in future Doom clones. Hmmm...maybe they already have...

The graphics in PO'ed aren't fabulous, but they aren't anything unexpected either. If you've played Doom then you already know what PO'ed looks like. The walls and objects become pixelated as you go near them -- how can you expect anything else?

The music? What's there is fairly well done, but the game has no soundtrack during the actual playing. The sound effects are annoying, but still sharp and clear, fortunately. If you can't tolerate the silly sound effects, then mute your television and turn on your favorite music group. I think you'll find me listening to Skinny Puppy...

PO'ed is a very long game, but password and memory cards can be used, so you won't have to play through the game in one sitting. You can't though, due to the length of the game. Passwords on a game like this are a definite must.

There are a few downsides to this one. Like mentioned, the sound is annoying. Also, the scrolling is rather choppy, leaving the player in a state of disorientation. It's sometimes difficult to escape from and destroy enemies, and some levels are just too large and difficult. That's to be expected though, as first person shooters seem to have this quality. Despite these various drawbacks, PO'ed is fun, pure and simple. The ability to fly adds a whole new side to the genre, and isn't a hindrance at all. In fact, I found myself flying whenever possible!

I advise you to give this one a look. I've never enjoyed Doom, or any of it's one million clones, but I took a liking to this one. Not a game you would want to show your grandmother, but worth a rent or buy anyhow.
