War Gods
Nintendo 64 * Midway

Review by Jonathan Ratcliffe
7.0

You wouldn't think that they would try to pull this one on us. War Gods is simply Mortal Kombat under a different name. It follows along the lines of the most recent of the series, and the play mechanics, special moves and combos are so similar it's scary. While this isn't such a bad thing, it doesn't rate very high in fun either.

You are given a choice of ten strange characters, all of which have been dealt several special moves and one finishing move each. After choosing your player, you're goal is to win two of the three rounds, performing a fatality at the end of the final round, ala Mortal Kombat. Combos follow along those that Mortal Kombat 3 introduced, hitting one button after another. Since War Gods is a "3D" fighter, Midway has incorporated a "3D" button, which allows you to jump into and out of the flat plain that 2D fighters are limited to. As you use this tactic, the camera shifts to put the characters next to one another once again. While this feature isn't all that new, it does allow the players to escape projectiles and other attacks, without blocking, however, the means of doing so is a bit cumbersome. The player must hold the 3D button and use the control pad to make use of this feature, which is too difficult to quickly avoid incoming attacks. Yet another addition to a fighting game to make it seem more "unique" than the rest.

The graphics are good, although grainy at times, especially the characters. They seem digitized, as in Mortal Kombat, but they move like characters in some of the more recent 3D fighting games. Very cool, but the effect doesn't appear as realistic as I think the creators had hoped. The backgrounds are very detailed and clear, however, which makes me wonder if this game was rushed. Some parts of the visuals simply look better than others. War Gods would have benefited from further tweaking before it’s release.

The play control is very similar to that of Mortal Kombat an its incarnations, although not quite as sharp as I would have hoped. The music and sound effects are very much like Mortal Kombat as well, complete with the word "Fatality" and others in the familiar, sinister MK voice. The music seems like it was taken straight from MK as well, although there are levels of the game that feature metal tunes and such. The difficulty, well, let's just say it's hard. The special moves are easy to perform, although not that unique, but even on the easiest difficulty level War Gods screams "frustration", much like that of past Mortal Kombat games. Perhaps that's better that being too easy, no?

Overall, War Gods was so much like Mortal Kombat that I wondered if this was Mortal Kombat. The play control, special moves, gameplay and overall mood of the game seem so similar to the game that it's flat out haunting. This wouldn’t be all that bad, had the game not been so rushed during development. War Gods suffers from a very noticeable "unpolished" feeling, making it seem as it was left unfinished. A decent title, but if you’re sick of the Mortal Kombat hype, don't even try this one. Maybe when you get some new ideas, guys?
