Welcome to the Civil War Facts Page. Every week, I will post three strange, fascinating, and/or bizarre facts about the Civil War. This week's facts are:

76. Hate having to pay taxes?? Well, you can blame the American Civil War for them, because it is partly responsible. On August 2, 1861, about four months into the conflict, the U.S. Congress issued a national income tax on incomes over $800.

77. On April 2, 1863, President Jefferson Davis put a dramatic end to Richmond's "bread riot." As an unruly mob demanding bread began to loot Richmond stores, Davis mounted a wagon, delivered a patriotic speech, threw the mob all the money from his pockets, then gave them five minutes to disperse before Confederate troops opened fire. They dispersed.

78. On December 20, 1861, two troopships filled with British soldiers left Great Britain, bound for Canada. They were to be used in war against the United States. The troops had been dispatched by the British government in response to the seizure of the British ship Trent by the U.S. Navy and the capture of two Confederate diplomats on board. Diplomacy ended the crisis, however, and the soldiers did not see combat.
