Nice webpage. The introduction with the whirly spheres tends to choke my browser, though. It's good to see somebody still remembers Moo 1; I've only played the first, and I can't find the second in any Australian shops. =(

This will be a long comment, and I would like you to post it to your tactics board.
MOO1 Tactics to follow, but first…
The real problem with MOO1 is that the starting conditions can raise you or kill you. And while the stranger starts are not often encountered, they can change the effective level by 2: from impossible to average, from average to impossible. I would not b
surprised that even greater change is possible, way out on the bell curve of possible starts. So you can pick your starting conditions by tossing the games that do not suit. Try, for instance, average level games where the second planet is trash, or bett
r still, not there. These games are rare, but the do exist. Just toss all the ‘too good’ starts. And they can sometimes be Impossible to win, although most will become romps when you break past the barrier and get a second or third planet: after all you s
ill have the Average game’s costs for research and factories and ships. For example, you could find yourself in a game vs the Siliconoids and all/most of the planets too hard to colonize. It may not matter what game playing level you started on, you are l
kely to loose.
A few more tactics, although these may be just habits.
If you put the anti-spy percentage at 9% most of your spying troubles will be over. Exceptions: someone way ahead on computers and the Darloks. For those the best is 10 or 11 percent. Above that you are hurting yourself too much. 8% will let noticeably mo
e rip-offs happen. Supposedly fluctuating from high to low is best, but I have seldom bothered. I like just set and forget.
Starting tactics: always save the game on the first move. I have always sent 21 colonists to the second world. Just habit, but it has worked out well. I have shifted from waiting for full production when starting my colony ships to waiting until I have at
least 150 production, and then shaving off loose production points to build a slight amount of production every turn. Too many times someone got a jump on me the other way.
I first use that second world (after it passes 15 or better 17 production) to produce scouts. When spread around, these can deny information about the world to the enemy and may deny him the world, if he does not build armed colony ships. I am building ar
ed colony ships now as a matter of course. I did not do so for the Impossible Mersian win. There I got a break: an accidental hit of the keys got me another type of scout ship: cost 8 instead of 10, and not different in any way. This, after I had a very f
w research projects completed.
One must recognize that the game goes through phases, and be ready for them. What works in one does not work in another. One of the things that I like about MOO1 is that the phases are so wonderfully balanced. Exploration, Re-entrenchment, Defense wins al
ost all battles, Attack wins almost all battles. There is a balance between attack and defense that goes back and forth during the game. Knowing which is supreme will change your tactics greatly. Almost any single tactic has its failing points if employed
in the wrong time or wrong situation.

Alkaris have more than millitary abilities, because there propulsion is helpful in expanding.
At the beginning I use these designs: small sub-lights with ion cannons for fighting, or fusion boms for bombing.
To clear misconceptions I haven't played moo2. It does sound like a neat game. I chose 1 as my favorite only because I don't have the other.

I like the alkaris because they make such a good story with their heroic names and their eternal fued with the mrrshans(I often restart a game until I can have the mrrshans in the same game with the alkaris. Another reason I like the alkaris is that they
emind me of Buck Rogers friend, Hawk.
When I play as the alkaris I actually play a supriseingly human game(yes, there can be "Nice Alkaris"), that is I stay low, grab planets here and there, and be peaceful(heh-heh). I often feed tech and money to a less successful race, and even start wars
to preserve the balance of power.
When at war I follow a modification of the games advice; that is I look for week planets, and wreck
havoc, and make conquest secondary. I do so with one large fleet normally, though.
In peacetime I like to get lots of cash. I am bad on bookkeeping, though and leave much to my provincial governors.
I have won several average-large galaxy games with
my "nice alkaris". I hope your way serves you as well.
Care of not given, also known as "Hawk"

Blaze, Outstanding site! Thanks so much for making me feel better that I'm not the only moo player alive and im not that old. great choice to base a site on! thanks
I employ a unique missile boat strategy. A good game, is a game where it doesn't take too long, and you can finish off 5 separate enemies on a medium board quickly with low techs. Stingers rule man! no matter (almost) what year it is, stingers always fi
ht!

Master of Orion is great but impossible mode is almost impossible to win with eight races but I cheat by editing the save game files. The usual cheap method is that I start my own race with full pop. and all factories built. It's the only way I get ahea
of the coms.
