Homecoming

I like this level with it's ruined city and amphitheater. You are sent in, against overwhelming odds, to recover the mystical Codex. You'll get seventeen Wariors, eight Archers, two Dwarfs and a Journeyman (no partridge, no pear tree). The Jman is the only one capable of carrying the Codex, if he dies the game ends.

Just because you've got a lot of Warriors in this one doesn't mean you play it like Body Count. Bungie went through a lot of trouble to make 3D landscapes for you. Use them, and remember, Rock-Paper-Scissors. When you first come in through the knot, get everyone clear but the Archers, but put the Warriors where they can stop the Ghols from killing your Archers should they rush you right off. Now shoot all the soulless. Don't chase them, make them come to you and get them off the amphitheater wall before you get into a shooting match with them. The best way to do this is simply turn your back on them. They hate it, it makes them crazy.
Now that you've killed everything in the area and you've got some cool veterans, head through the center of the theater and set up on the North ramp. Send a Warrior out to find the bad guys and bring them into your nice little ramp of death. This done, head North West to the Cathedral and set up off it's North West corner, where the door is. Hide your Dwarves behind the wall and wait for the Thrall while you shoot all the Soulless. Finish here, then move around the North side of the Cathedral to the back or East side. Do not cut through the middle! You'll trigger another big army to come after you. Keep fighting from the back side of the Cathedral and use up all your Jman heals on all your veterans. After you've once again killed everything, you'll find amongst the dead inside the Cathedral, the body of a slain Jman. Jmen drop their roots when they die. Pick them up and use them. This will trigger the final army. Kill them using the Cathedral for cover. Now's the hard part. There's a whole bunch of Ghols with puss blocking your way out (the South East corner of the map). You'll need to dance around with them for a bit and whittle them down. When you've either got them real spread out or mostly dead, pick up the Codex with the Jman. He goes on auto pilot as soon as you pick up the book. Just escort him out of there.

Hints:

  • Use all your healing roots before you pick up the Codex
  • Be patient with the Ghols, don't let them get the better of you.
  • Try to use the satchels set up at the Cathedral.
    Here's the film.
