here are some documentation from SOS online about upgrading

Thank you for contacting SONY.

Although your PCV-E203 is readily upgradeable, SONY currently does not have an upgrade program for existing computers. The following information may prove helpful to you.

NOTE: If your system is less than one-year old, please be aware that installation of new hardware components will impact your warranty. Please refer to the warranty information supplied with your SONY PC before performing hardware upgrades. Your warranty states in part:

"This Limited Warranty does not cover...damage due to... modifications of this product..."

The warranty further states:

"This Limited Warranty does not apply when the malfunction results from the use of this Product in conjunction with accessories, products or ancillary or peripheral equipment..."

If you have purchased an extended warranty through your retailer, you may wish to verify if the new hardware installation will impact your contract.

Please note that we cannot recommend or endorse third party products. Please contact your local computer hardware or peripheral retailer for additional information on the latest computer products. You may also wish to reference any of the major computer magazines, both in print and online, for computer hardware specifications, reviews, and comparisons.

[Upgrading the processor and motherboard]

The GVC OEM motherboard in the Sony PCV-E203 system supports a single Pentium II or Celeron processor. The motherboard currently supports processors that run internally at 233, 266, 300, or 333MHz and have up to 512 KB of second-level cache.

The processor implements MMX technology and maintains full backwards compatibility with the 8086, 80286, Intel386, Intel486, Pentium, and Pentium Pro processors. The processor's numeric coprocessor significantly increases the speed of floating-point operations and complies with ANSI/IEEE standard 754-1985.

[Upgrading the memory]

The motherboard supports:

3.3V unbuffered 4-clock 64-bit 66 MHz SDRAM DIMM (rev 1.0) 3.3V unbuffered 4-clock 72-bit 66 MHz SDRAM DIMM (rev 1.0)

This model ships with 64-bit Non ECC memory.

SONY has tested the following memory modules for compatibility:

Micron 64MB DIMMs (part# T-9350-110-1) Micron 128MB DIMMs (part# T-9350-111-1)

By default, your system ships with one 32MB memory module and one 16MB memory module occupying both of the two slots (48MB total). In order to increase the memory, one of the factory-installed DIMMs must be removed and replaced by a DIMM of greater capacity.

The memory options in Slot 1 and Slot 2 are interchangeable.

In addition to the manufacturer's installation instructions supplied with the new memory, you may wish to reference the VAIO Computer User Guide. Click the "arrow" to the immediate left of the 'Upgrading and Maintaining Your VAIO Microtower' heading and then click the subtopic 'Adding Memory'.

[Upgrading the video adapter]

The AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) version of the ATI 3D Rage Pro Turbo graphics processor and 4MB of video RAM is integrated on the motherboard. The video RAM is physically soldered to the motherboard and cannot be upgraded. However, AGP technology makes use of system memory, decreasing the need for upgrading the video memory.

AGP technology improves system performance by providing a high speed pathway between the PC's graphics controller and system memory. This pathway enables the graphics controller to execute texture maps directly from system memory rather than caching them in its limited local memory. It also helps speed the flow of decoded video from the CPU to the graphics controller.

For more information on AGP, visit the following site:

http://developer.intel.com/technology/agp/tutorial/

If you decide to replace the existing video card, you will need to purchase a PCI video card. The motherboard does not have an AGP expansion slot (the existing video processor is integrated with motherboard's AGP bus). The SONY Internet Group Technical Response Center CC5Y

As you can see from the diagram, that was my old 16mb ram. This motherboard only has 2 ram slots so I removed that one and another 32mb module. Now, I have a 64 mb sdram pc 66 pin and a 128 mb inside. The 128mb sdram was a bargain at $77.50 (included shipping) which I bought from Yahoo Auctions(2-2-00) The 128mb's specifications were Kingston #: KVR-PC66/128 Description: 128MB 66MHz DIMM Form Factor: DIMM
