I Used To Believe
I used to believe...
that the phrase "You belong to me"..was degrading and demoralizing, words used by someone whose mentality bordered on that of the stone age philosophy that all women are possesions to be won or conquered. Coveted, but not seen as nor treated as an equal. I have learned now...
that the phrase means "I love you"..and to belong to someone means not to be won or conquered, but to be a part of another in ways that defy any and all words and meanings...two halves of the same whole.
I used to believe...
that if people found their one true love, they were blessed, for only once in their lifetime might they have such a thing, if they ever found it all.
I have learned now...
that true love comes not once in a lifetime, but once in an entire existence.
I used to believe....
that dreams were for children, and that as we grew older, we outgrew silly childish dreams and simply accepted what life offered us and made the best of it.
I have learned now...
that the day we stop dreaming is the day we beagn to grow old and fall into the state of acceptance of our own images of our shortcomings and failures.
I used to believe...
that magic was for children and that as we grew up, like dreams we put aside such childish notions and looked at the world through the eyes of clarity and realism.
I have learned now....
that the day we stop believing in magic, stop looking at the world and each other, with eyes that see the wonder and amazment in all things, is the day we learn how to hate and begin to slowly die.
