abriel Knight's second trial as Schattenjäger begins when the villagers of Rittersburg demand that he fulfill the responsibilities of his family title. Gabriel is initially cynical towards the villagers' insistence that the wolf attacks plaguing Munich and nearby villages are due to werewolves rather than wolves from a local zoo. However, investigation soon shows that these are no ordinary wolves.

eanwhile, Grace Nakimura travels to Rittersburg to help out Gabriel (whether he wants help or not ;). Gabriel believes her research into the history of King Ludwig II has no relevance to his current case, and will keep her safely out of the way. But Grace realizes the importance of her research to his present case when she uncovers the long history that werewolves and the Schattenjägers share.

hile Grace begins to piece together the dark mystery that links King Ludwig II, the composer Wagner, and a Bavarian noble known as the Black Wolf, Gabriel discovers that the line between salvation and damnation is much thinner than he ever imagined. In order for Gabriel to emerge from this trial with his soul intact, Grace must help him face his inner demons and overcome a powerful supernatural tempter.
