Champions of the Apocalypse
This is one of my newest projects. COTA is a game being developed by a fellow named Gerald Prudhomme and others. His description of the game is better than mine, so I invite you to visit his exellent site, Apollo Labs.
As with Caelius, many of these pieces will seem very short. That is because they were written to loop; the ending matches the beginning of each piece. Set your MIDI players accordingly.
Apollo Labs Theme
Gerard asked me for an official Apollo Labs theme, so here's a brief, majestic orchestral that fits the bill.
Overture
A stirring opening theme in which I try to reach for the majesty that Koichi Sugiyama reaches with his legendary Dragon Quest theme. Did I suceed? I'll let you decide.
Faded Diary
A brief motif for the load/save game screen. Just some simple guitar work.
Rugged Terrain
The map theme. Quite relaxing with some nice piano and flute sections. Calm with a dash of adventurous spirit.
A Welcoming Village
Town theme in soft-pop. :) I like the guitar line and the uplifting string section near the end. You know the drill...talk to people, upgrade your gear, and learn about your next quest.
Garmun's Theme
One of the supporting characters. Used to be a valiant warrior, but now he just seems content to drink his life away. Perhaps a good quest will get him in shape again...? Playful little tune with a catchy clairnet line and a quirky xylophone background.
The Gothic Tower
Yes, you HAVE heard this one before...it's a condensation of Goth Excitement from my Recent Works page. At Gerard's request, I shortened it into a loopable piece and reworked the drums. Great hard rock for climbing up to face your destiny. :)
Clashing Blades
What's an RPG without a stirring battle theme? This is rock with a kicking, raging guitar. My original concept was more orchestal, but at Gerard's suggestion, I converted my idea into this powerhouse.
A More Worthy Opponent
The boss music! While the first half is slower and more mysterious, the second half rages with electric guitar fury. No, I'm not sure why I tried that approach either. :)
Victory!
The monsters have been whooped! So let's play a little happy trumpet-based theme while we rake in the gold and experience! :)
Falling in Sorrow
...what, you LOST the battle? Oh well, that happens just as much. A sorrowful little number is called for then, with flutes, backing strings, and even a dash of harmonica. Sniff...
Cathedral Windows
A calm, somber piece for church organ and strings. I was aiming for a holy, hymn-like aura.
Daecigh's Theme
It's hard to tell which side of the law this bitter character is on. As a result, his theme is both up-tempo and uncertain.
Evergreens
A pleasant, upbeat theme for forest exploration. I decided that not ALL of the music in this game had to be dark... :)
Minea's Theme
One of the female characters in COTA. A serene princess by nature, I devised a delicate theme for her. Have you seen Once Upon a Time in the West? Film composer Ennio Morricone devised a lush, soft theme for the movie's heroine, Jill McBain. I drew on that for inspiration for this character sketch, with a lovely vibraphone-based section, followed by a wordless vocal moment. I'm very fond of this piece.
Cassandra's Theme
A woman with the skill of potion-making, she was exiled from her village under suspicion as a witch. Her music is somewhat reminiscent of a folk dance.
Hamlet of Snow
Another town theme, for a village with an arctic setting (I just LOVE composing arctic themes for some reason... :). A guitar and harmonica share the spotlight on this very tranquil theme. Go to the inn, grab a warm cup of ale, and sit by the fire planning your next destination.
Collette's Theme
Now here's a lady who's a FEROCIOUS warrior. This powerful theme is part Eastern mystical music, part rock, and...hear anything familiar? Yep, there's a little of Garmun's theme in there too...because Garmun is her father! A lot of fun listening to this one.
Delinian's Theme
An honorable knight, and so I filled his theme with orchestral national pride. Quite good.
Destiny March
I've been sitting on this instrumental for about half a year now. It's a wonderful, militaristic piece that I wrote in a Final Fantasy Tactics vein, but I wasn't sure where it belonged. Finally, I decided to let Gerard have it. And boy, did that make him happy. :)
Battle for Our Last Hope
By all accounts, I ought to give Ennio Morricone a writing credit on this piece, especially ythe last half. And I'll be the first to admit that the first half is rather dry in comparison, probably because I was more concerned with the second half. It is this part that is inspired by Morricone's "Man with a Harmonica," the great suspenseful theme from Once Upon a Time... It's not a total rip, though... ;)
As more information comes my way, more pieces will be added. Enjoy!
