BACKGROUND

The first Robotech war showed that the primary cargo plane of the RDF- the huge Tunny VTOL, was extremely vunerable if attacked. It's large size, low speed, low ceiling and lack of manouverability made it an easy target for attackers. During the Malcontent uprisings many were attacked and hjacked by Malcontent groups, often providing them with parts for their infamous "Stinger" mecha. The Southern Cross command decided that a replacement was needed. The new aircraft had to be fast and high-flying, and capable of transporting troops, mecha and equipment rapidly to far-off locations.

The end result of this program was the C-37A Albatross. The huge cargo plane was able to carry an immense amount of cargo (450 tons) or a full squadron of mecha. Addtionally, it was powered by fusion turbines, rather than conventional fuel, giving it a large radius of action.

The Albatross was used extensively by the TAF during the second Robotech War to transport mecha into battle. Unfortunately, even the high performance of the Albatross paled before the Tirolian Assault Carriers that they often camer up against. Many were destroyed in the Second Robotech War, and most of those remaining were destroyed by the Invid.
