VR-021 Hargun Veritech Combat Cycle
RPG Stats and Background by: Rick R. Mortis.
Technical Info from the Robotech Technical Files, by Peter Walker and Pieter Thomassen, with Rob Morgenstern
BACKGROUND
As the Southern Cross considred the future of its significant investment in infantry units, its commanders began to realise that their troops, despide being extremely well equipped, were still near-worthless against Mecha. Using the same reasoning as the REF would in the development of the Cyclone, the Southern Cross began to develop light ground Veritechs as well. The result was a series of Veritech motorcycles based around a common torso concept. Unlike the REF's Cyclone, the pilot of these mecha was fully enclosed in armour in Battloid mode, and the unit was a true mecha, not a battlesuit.
The result of the program was the Hargun Combat Cycle. The torso prototype was finalised in 2020, but at this time the designers were unable to perfect the mecha's transformable limbs. As an improvised solution, the design team developed a system of detachable limbs that could be carried by a specilised deployment vehicle. The Motorcycle would drive into the rear of the truck, whereupon the limbs would be attached. The Mecha would then transform and deploy from the vehcile. The transformation was seen as cumbersome; however, the usefulness of the light Battloid in urban situations impressed the GMP enough for them to order several thousand for their use. Unfortunately the Hurgun's battlefield use was soon provbend to be limited; the mecha could only carry a 32mm Gunpod, leaving it somewhat underarmed. Likewise, the Deployment vehcile was very slow, unarmed and weakly armoured. This latter problem was partialy solved with the development of a heavier transport version of the GMP Flagga hoverplatform.
Several hundred Harguns were built for the and used by GMP from 2025-2030. Very few Harguns survived the Second Robotech War and the Invid Invasion. The Hargun was unpopular amongst freedom fighters, because while it offered better protection for the pilot than the Cyclone, it also required a support vehicle to transport its limbs in order for it to transform.
Note: With the Hargun support truck (detailed elsewhere), it takes a Hargun a full melee combat round (15 seconds) to enter the truck and transform into battloid mode, or to transform back into cycle mode from the truck. Transfroming to Cycle mode in the field by just dropping the limbs costs the Hargun half its attacks/actions that round. Attaching the limbs in the field requires a trained technician, tools and 1D4 minutes.
RPG STATS
Vehicle Type: One-man Semi-Veritech Urban Combat/Law Enforcement Motorcycle
Crew: One. A passenger may be carried on the back in Motorcycle mode, but must be dropped before the mecha transforms.

WEAPON SYSTEMS
Note: Uless stated otherwise, the Hargun's weapons can only be used in Battloid form.
- GU-19 32mm Gun Pod. The Hargun uses a small, single-barrelled 32mm gun pod as its primary weapon. The gun pod uses the same 32mm ammo as the Gladiator’s TV-IV 32mm Autocannon. As this gun was somewhat weak, the Hargun was always considered to be underarmed.
- Purpose: Assault/Anti-personell
- Range: 1200m
- Mega-Damage: 2D6 MD for a short burst, 4D6 MD for a long burst.
- Rate of Fire: Equal to the total hand-to-hand attacks of the pilot.
- Payload: 20 rounds - a short burst uses up 3 rounds and a long burst uses five. The Hargun carries a spare clip in each leg.
- N-1 Net Launcher. The Hargun is also equipped with a net launcher for capturing Small mecha and vehicles. The Net Launcher is hand-held.
- Purpose: Capture
- Range: 60m
- Mega-Damage: No damage, however, the target is -4 to strike, parry and dodge until they can escape the net (roll over the Attackers to-hit roll, with no bonuses)
- Rate of Fire: Single Shot.
- Payload: One net
- Magnetic Grapples. The Hargun is equipped with four towlines, each with a magnetic grappling head. The grapples can be used for towing vehicles, climbing, or to capture small mecha. Two of the grapples launch from the front of the mecha in motorcycle mode (shoulders in battloid mode), and the other two from the rear.
- Purpose: Towing
- Range: 10m
- Mega-Damage: No damage, however, the target is -3 to dodge until they can escape (roll over the Attackers to-hit roll, with no bonuses)
- Rate of Fire: Once per round.
- Parrying Shield. The Hargun is also equipped with a heavy parrying shield to help protect it from damage. The shield can be used to parry any incoming attack (missile, projectile, energy, etc), and gives the pilot a +2 to parry. The shield can not regenerate, and must be repaired or replaced.
- Hand to Hand Combat. Rather than use any weapons, the Hargun can opt to engage in hand to hand combat.
- Punch: 1D6 MD
- Kick: 1D6 MD
- Leap Kick: 2D6 MD
- Body Flip/Throw: 1D4 MD
- Body Block/Tackle: 1D6 MD plus knockdown.
- Beam Sword (Optional) Colonel BD Andrews’ personal Hargun was equipped with a specially-designed beam sword, powered by its own dedicated Protoculture cell. This sword is not known to have been issued to any other units, but it is possible...
- Purpose: Anti-mecha
- Range: Hand-to-hand
- Mega-Damage: 4D6 MD
- Rate of Fire: Equal to hand-to-hand attacks.
- Payload: Effectively unlimited.
- Bonus: +1 to strike, +1 to parry
STANDARD EQUIPMENT FOR THE HARGUN:
- Radar: Range: 30 km. Standard operation.
- Radio/Video Communications: Wide band, directional radio and video telecast capabilities. Range: 1000km, or can be boosted by satellite.
- Laser Targeting System: Close range; 1 km
- Combat Computer: Calculates, stores & monitors data on the control panel computer screen or Heads-up display
- External Audio Pickup: Range: 300 ft (91.5 m). A sound amplification system that can pick up normal conversation up to 300 feet away.
- Loudspeaker: A loudspeaker system is built into the craft, which can be used to amplify the pilot's voice up to 90 decibels.
- Optics: Infrared: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). This optical system projects a beam of infrared light that is invisible to the normal eye, but detectable by the mecha's sensors. The system allows the pilot to detect hidden/concealed objects by their IR reflectiveness. The beam will be visible to anyone with IR sensitive optics, however.
- Optics: Nightvision: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). A passive light image intensifier that emits no light of its own, but relies on ambient light which is electronically amplified to produce a visible picture.
- Optics: Thermal Imager: Range: 2000 feet (610 m). A passive optical heat sensor that detects infrared radiation projected by warm objects and converts that data into a false-colour visible image. The system enables the pilot to see in the dark, in shadows, and through smoke, and also adds a +10% bonus to pilots using a tracking skill.
- Protoculture Engine: The Hargun runs off Protoculture power cells, in much the same manner as the Cyclone. The Hargun uses four cells, two in the body and one in each leg. Typically, the Hargun will last about 114 operational hours before cell replacement. Constant leaping or flying will not wear out the cells quicker, as the Hargun uses dedicated cells to power it’s thrusters. Normally, the Hargun will alert its pilot when power is running low.
HAND TO HAND COMBAT BONUSES FOR HARGUN COMBAT TRAINING:
- 2 attacks per melee (plus those of the pilot)
- Add one addtional attack at levels four, eight and twelve
- +1 on initative
- +1 to strike
- +2 to parry, +4 with shield
- +3 ro dodge, +4 in motorcycle mode
- +2 to rolll with a punch or impact, reducing damage by half
- Critical strike same as pilot's hand to hand.
