Umm.. haha... I kind of dropped this section... but I feel it is my duty to keep rollin' these puppies out. So, without further adieu, I present to you... the March pick of the month.
I imagine most of you NES fans can recall some great two-player simultaneous games. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II & III, Contra, Life Force, Tecmo Bowl, the list goes on... One of my favorite games to play with a friend is SNK's Guerilla War.
If you've ever played Ikari Warriors, you'll have a basic idea about what Guerilla War is all about. It's an overhead view action game based on a revolution, so of course you play militant rebels. On a new addition from |tsr's latest update, he says the game was originally called "Guevara!" in Japan, in which case, the game is based on the revolt against the Batista regime, which was led by Fidel Castro and Ernesto (Che) Guevara. I'm a fairly big Guevara buff, and I always had a suspicion that this game was at least loosely based on him. Take a look at the opening picture!
Che's famous image
Now, don't you agree with me that they look very similar? I'm trying to find a picture of Che where he has his hair and beard trimmed similar to the picture from the game, but until then, you can use these to compare. The game also has the cliche revolutionary wardrobe: Black leather, camoflauge, and a powder-blue beret. I have a feeling you're all sick of hearing me brag about my knowledge of Che, so I'll stop, but if anyone wants me to put more up on him for the comparison, let me know! Anyways, back to the game itself... The graphics suffer from the "blinking syndrome", which is a term I think I invented, perhaps someone else uses it. Regardless, this is when the system has to keep track of a large number of on-screen items moving around, so the images start blinking or just become transparent. But the action's so fast, you'll care less about the graphics. The sound isn't anything to write home about, typical beeps and bloops, but we have to make sacrifices for good game play. As for challenge, it's fun for people of all skill, because you have infinite continues, and it's a great way to kill a half hour! Here's the screen shot which i'm hoping to bring to every pick of the month/crap pick from now on:
